RePost: Cloudkicker - The Discovery (2008) & The Map Is Not The Territory (2008)

"This album was recorded for a grand total of $0, and is therefore being distributed for free. If you paid money for this you're a sucker."

schreibt, finde ich großartig. Obwohl ich bei einem Album/einer EP dieser Qualität kein Problem damit hätte, Geld zu bezahlen. Er schreibt weiter:

"Distribute this anywhere and everywhere you see fit. Give credit where credit is due."

Also, holt euch die EP und das Album, hört es an und wenns euch gefällt, gebt es weiter. Ich denke, ich habe meinen Auftrag hiermit erfüllt... oder etwa nicht, Herr Sharp?

___________________________________________________________

Did you ever, while listening to a Meshuggah record, wonder: "What if those guys would once try really hard and incorporate some melodies into their music?" I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Meshuggah, but every once and then one needs a break from all the complexity... and you don't get those from Meshuggah. For everybody who feels exactly the same: I've got just the thing.

Ben Sharp apparently felt the same way and started his one man project Cloudkicker. The EP The Map Is Not The Territory and the LP The Discovery sound like they were written and performed by Meshuggah themselves at times. But Ben Sharp did all of that himself and additionally uses the whole spectrum of emotions for his records... from hate-ridden to life-affirming. And this is what makes these records unique.

Everything Meshuggah stand for, polyrhythmic drumming, repetitive riffing, is in these tracks, but there's more: Mr Sharp adds overlying melodies to his very complex songs. And those melodies make Cloudkicker a lot more then just your average Meshuggah clone. The melodies and the fact that Clodkicker doesn't need vocals.

I also admire Ben's philosophy; in his liner notes, he wrote:

"This album was recorded for a grand total of $0, and is therefore being distributed for free. If you paid money for this you're a sucker."

Although, for a LP/an EP of equivalent quality I would gladly pay some money, no questions asked. Furthermore he wrote:

"Distribute this anywhere and everywhere you see fit. Give credit where credit is due."

So, you people who read this, get the LP/EP, listen to it and if you like it, give it to a friend. I think, my job here is done... is it, Mr Sharp?

The Polar Dream - The Polar Dream EP (2009)

I know, I know... I'm a little late, reviewing this old EP when the five Mexicans have already released their debut album called Follow Me To The Forest, but nevertheless, this EP is worth being reviewed.

With their beautiful melodies and their very positive songs, they have managed to amaze me in a way Sigur Ros did when I first listened to their (). Not that I do want to draw a comparison here, The Polar Dream do not sound like Sigur Ros, they have a very unique sound. They do use the same instruments (Do I hear a Glockenspiel or a Xylophone here and there?), but The Polar Dream create a rock oriented sound, which I find is one of a kind.

Interested? If yes, download it and if you like it, I urge you to support these guys and buy their debut album.

Puentes Llamándome al Unísono - Los Días Felices EP (2008)

Hello everyone, I'm back and started working through our already backed up request-log. The first record I chose to review is called Los Días Felices, which I guess means as much as The Happy Days. And that is exactly what the first track, bearing the same title as the record, sounds like: not upbeat, but it has a very positive and nostalgic vibe to it. This track sounds just beautiful.

The second track, De Regreso A Todos Los Adioses (Back To All Farewells), is a kind of sad, melancholic tune, almost the exact opposite of the first rack. A little bit slower, darker and more grim than the first track, it is very powerful nonetheless.

If you are interested in Ambient/Soundscaping, then this might be just the thing for you.

Slow Dancing Society - Under The Sodium Lights (Release date: digital - 25th of august, CD - 30th of september 2010)

Slow Dancing Society is definitely one of my all-time-favourites out of ambient/shoegaze! Check out the new release!

Quote: "Perth, Western Australia; Spokane, Washington. The Australian music label Hidden Shoal Recordings has announced the eagerly awaited fourth album by US ambient artist Slow Dancing Society.

Following on from the ebullient warmth of the critically acclaimed Priest Lake Circa ’88, Under The Sodium Lights is Drew Sullivan’s latest ambient epic. The album feels like a distillation of the three stunning releases that preceded it – and as such is Sullivan’s finest work to date. The delicate interplay between focused melodic details and blurred washes of sound draws the listener into a hypnotic state, where the waking world and the world of sleep cascade in and out of balance.

First single ‘…and to the dust we shall return’ sees the gradual accretion of reverberant guitar tones, emerging from the silence as sparse reflections across the stereo field. Slow searching melodies overlap and accumulate before a descending bass figure carries the song home to its elegiac conclusion. From the luscious, tactile dream of ‘The Songs In Your Eyes’ to hopeful finale ‘Love Is On The Way’, Under The Sodium Lights resonates with a rich emotional core – and the choking realisation of our own transience. The album rewards immersive listening from start to
finish, to really soak in its beauty.

Slow Dancing Society is Washington-based musician/ producer and nostalgist extraordinaire, Drew Sullivan. With influences ranging from classic artists such as Brian Eno, Def Leppard, Tears For Fears, The Cure, Pink Floyd and Prince to contemporary artists like Manual, Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós and Hammock, Sullivan has developed a formidable reputation for producing emotional and immersive ambient music across four Slow Dancing Society releases.

“a complexity of sound that allows it to stand out from traditionally ambient music… It is easy to get dissolved in this album, to let yourself fall into meditation as the music plays… Textures and timbre are executed with great precision… Even the simplest of songs allow complimentary textures to be layered upon each other to create a robust yet spacious sound… an aural delight for the listener.” – The Silent Ballet on Priest Lake Circa ’88

“Music is all about moments like this. Moments when you are, unexpectedly, knocked over and stunned into submission by an album that has, quite literally, came from nowhere... deeply affecting, consistently excellent… demands repeated listening” – Boring Machines Disturb Sleep on The Sound of Lights When Dim

Under The Sodium Lights will be available as a digital pre-release on the 25th of August followed by the official CD release on 30 September 2010.

Hidden Shoal Recordings is an Australia-based independent music label that has earned a reputation for releasing exciting and engaging new independent music that is not bound by genre or style. Hidden Shoal Recordings was recently chosen as one of the top ten favourite labels of 2007 by Textura magazine and has been dubbed “This generation’s 4AD” by prominent New York radio host DJ Mojo."

Vision Éternel - Abondance de périls (EP) (2010)

Quote (myspace): "This page is formally that of Triskalyon. It has since moved on to become solely for Vision Éternel, as it is the most prominent band that has survived through the fall of the group.Vision Éternel is a band used to distribute the emotions left over by a past that ended hurtfully. Each release is a concept of a period and the phases which ocured. The idea originally started in January 2007, when a few songs were written one night, and differed from the bands I was in at the time. The first EP "Seul dans l'obsession" came out on February 14th of that year (on Mortification Records), and a music video was made for the song "Love within Narcosis", which was the first single. "Love within Isolation" would be used a few months later as a second (semi)-single.In June 2007, I began working on the second EP "Un automne en solitude". The first single "Season in Desperation" was released in late August for online promotion, prior to the EP being released. In February 2008 "Season in Absence" was finally released as the second single and on March 14th, 2008 the mini album came out, also on Mortification Records. It was during this time that I decided to test out expanding VE into a full band. The first person to try out was Phil Altobelli (who was known as Darklink in Triskalyon). Well his foreign collaboration didn't last very long. Finally I landed on Nidal Mourad and Adam Kennedy, who joined as acoustic guitarist and solo-ist, respectively. This was the most creative pairing so far, but only managed to re-work two songs, before splitting up.Through out the year "Un automne en solitude" got to many ears and finally landed on someone on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. A compilation had been an idea for some time but it wasn't until Frozen Veins Records offered me the opportunity to do it with them that it became an actual plan. The work has paid off and "An Anthology of Past Misfortunes" was released on February 14th 2009, as a two year commemorative to the first release. It contains both EPs (Seul dans l'obsession & Un automne en solitude) along with additional unreleased material and a poster. The package was pressed in a limited quantity of 100.Through out 2008 and 2009 I had attempted to write material for a third ep, and possibly have enough for a full length album. After going through three phases of new material, I realized that the full-length would not happen but that the third ep would be moving to a greater extent than the previous efforts. It would be the first material to be recorded and released to feature external help. Adam Kennedy came back in the picture to master the album and add his special touch to it, and Marina Polak contributed greatly to the new look by giving us a picture that represented the new mood of Éternel. The EP "Abondance de périls" was released on March 9th 2010 on Abridged Pause Recordings.
