Pharoty - [Trapped] (EP) (2010)

THE MUSIC: Tasty riffs, exciting melodies and hypnotically grooving rhythms – these are the key ingredients not only of compelling rock music in general but of pharoty in particular.

The creative spectrum of this Tyrolean four-piece includes genuine groove monsters that will leave club audiences around the world breathless and dripping with sweat, as well as new anthemic treasures of alternative rock that build up throughout melodic verses and explode into emotionally charged choruses you will find hard to get out of your head. This skilful combination of acoustic and distorted parts is a trademark of this innovative and eclectic group. Their diversity is rounded off by a purely acoustic track that will send shivers down the listeners’ spines – whether it may be at a huge festival or at a campfire session. However, the catchy nature of all their tunes results in a constantly high sing-along factor!

It is difficult to pigeonhole the music of pharoty since they coquettishly flirt with various different greats of the contemporary music scene: Green Day meet Placebo and Nickelback meet Sunrise Avenue, plus: they never neglect their love for Chili Peppers-inspired Funk rock! To cut a long story short: pharoty offer a rich and independent mix of the newest and freshest developments in rock music and have plenty of potential hit material.

THE BAND: The band members were all students at the same school when they founded pharoty in 2003. In the very beginning, the band was merely more than just a creative outlet for two brothers and their friends to pass rainy Saturday afternoons. However, as time went on, their approach intensified as they became increasingly passionate about their project. They soon hit the stages of many rock clubs as well as regional outdoor-events. Their growing live-experience made them grow tighter as a musical unit as they went on from being a cover band to a group that strongly relies on its original material and constantly refines and develops its irresistible sound.

Time has come for them to drop their early cover songs, which have been a useful guide to songwriting in the past, in order to climb over the intimidating mountain peaks of the Tyrol with their debut-EP “Trapped” and to continue their journey into the wide world of rock.

Home - Promo EP (2010)

Home hatten schon einige Namen und Formationen und ist "als Projekt" schon einige Jahre aktiv. Die fixe, endgültige Formation ist erst im Oktober 2009 festgestanden. Nach einem ersten fulminanten Auftritt Ende 2009 im PMK in Innsbruck beschlossen sie ihren Namen ein letztes Mal zu ändern und eine Promo EP aufzunehmen.

Die Formation besteht aus bekannten Namen aus der Innsbrucker Underground-Szene Hans-Peter Ganner (Vocals, Bass; / Bassist-Sahara Surfers, ExBassist-DNR, ExBassist-Crippled), Amadeus Mader (Guitar; / ExGitarrist-Botanical Garden, ExGitarrist-Room 101) und der Multi-Instrumentalist Mathias Magerle (Drums; / ExVocalist-DNR, ExGitarrist-Crippled, ExMultiInstrumentalist-Jokers In Trousers).

Mit den 3 Songs auf dieser EP, die in Rekordzeit eingespielt waren, beweisen sie wahre Stärke und überraschen (mich jedenfalls) mit einer kompletten Stilrichtungsänderung. Hans-Peter ist erstmals am Mikrofon vertreten mit einer brachialen Stimme, die ich ihm wohl so nicht zugetraut hätte. Generell ist der Sound von Home sehr schwer einzuordnen. Mich erinnert es sehr an Kylesa, wobei man bei Kylesa auch nicht zu 100% sagen kann aus welcher Ecke sie stammen.

Ein Mix aus Sludge, Psychedelic und Hardcore erwartet euch hier. Jeder der Power in der Musik sucht, ist hier genau richtig. Viel Spaß!

Home had many names and formations since the beginning of this project. The final formation exists ever since octobre 2009. After a first trailbrazing gig at the end of 2009 in the PMK in Innsbruck the 3-piece decided to change the name a last time and record a Promo EP.

The band exists of very popular names of the underground-scene in Innsbruck. Hans-Peter Ganner (Vocals, Bass; / Bassist-Sahara Surfers, ExBassist-DNR, ExBassist-Crippled), Amadeus Mader (Guitar; / ExGuitarist-Botanical Garden, ExGuitarist-Room 101) and Multi-Instrumentalist Mathias Magerle (Drums; / ExVocalist-DNR, ExGuitarist-Crippled, ExMultiInstrumentalist-Jokers In Trousers).

With the 3 songs of this EP, that was recorded in no time, Home demonstrates pure strength and surprises (at all events ME) with a totally new soundscape. This is Hans-Peters first try in a band as vocalist with a totally brachial voice. The tunes are generally very hard to classify with a genre. It reminds me very much on the sounds of Kylesa. But it is also very hard to range the music of Kylesa.

A mix of Sludge, Psychedelic and Hardcore is awaiting you with this release. This is for everybody who is searching for music full of power! Have fun!

Reap - The World's Destructive Rulers (2007)

Gerade am Wochenende in Wien gesehen, und haben mich sehr schnell von ihrem Können überzeugen können. Reap schaffen Thrash Metal im Sinne von Sepultura bzw. Soulfly. Dass dies warscheinlich ihre größten Einflüsse sind waren schon nach ein paar Sekunden für mich klar. Eventuell Slayer können noch als großen Einfluss gedient haben. Alles in Allem ein sehr geiler Moshsound, das Publikum verließ sichtlich befriedigt den Saal. Nach ca. 10 Jahren Praxis kann man dies schon erwarten. Wer auf Thrash-Gemetzel steht (so wie ich) unbedingt anhören.

Saw them live at this weekend in vienna and they just blew me away with their sound. Reap makes Thrash Metal similar to Sepultura / Soulfly. After a few seconds i knew that this 2 bands have to be their most important influences. Eventually Slayer is also a big influence. All in all a very great moshing-sound and the audience left the concert hall with satisfaction in their eyes. After 10 years practice they just have to be a good live-band i think. It's a really good Thrash-butchery. For the people who dig this style of music (as i do), just listen to it!

Dirty Sun Jazz - Dirty Sun Jazz EP (2009)

Einige Male Live gesehen, jedes Mal ein Erlebnis gewesen. Dirty Sun Jazz ist eine Liveband wie sie im Buche steht. Auf der Bühne wird ordentlich Gas gegeben und das Publikum zum mitmachen animiert. Nach endlos vielen Auftritten haben sie „endlich“ ein paar ihrer Stücke eingespielt und physisch veröffentlicht. Das Ergebnis ist mehr als nur befriedigend, beinhaltet 5 Tracks und überzeugt mit ehrlichem Wüstenrock. Holt es euch!

Dirty Sun Jazz? Dirty Sánchez?

Zitiert aus Wikipedia: "Als Dirty Sánchez wird bezeichnet, wenn der aktive Partner beim Analverkehr unmittelbar nach der Ejakulation mit dem Finger in den Anus des passiven Partners eindringt und dann eine Mischung aus Sperma und Kot unter die Nase des passiven Partners streicht. Es ist keine tatsächlich verbreitete Sexualpraktik, übte aber eine große Wirkung auf die Popkultur aus, in der vor allem der absurd-komische Aspekt betont wurde.
Die Namensgebung wurde gewählt, da dies den Eindruck eines „mexikanischen Bärtchens“ erwecken soll. I saw Dirty Sun Jazz several times live, and every time was an experience for me. Dirty Sun Jazz is a „Liveband“ over and over. There are no constraints on stage. They rock like hell and the crowd is animated to rock with `em. Finally after endless live-gigs they recorded a few of their compositions to release it physically and digitally for you. The output is more than only satisfying. It includes 5 tracks and scores with true desert-rock. Check it out!

Anoroc - The Completion Of Our Exaggeration (2009)

Unsere Freunde von Anoroc haben endlich ihr neues Werk am Start, das erst morgen live präsentiert wird, aber schon heute hier digital erhältlich ist. Ich hatte schon einige Informationen im Vorfeld bekommen, welche Einflüsse das neue Output enthalten würde. Wie hier nachzulesen, tat ich mich damals sehr schwer das erste Album "AntiGONE" zu beschreiben und nachdem sie gesagt hatten, dass das nächste Album ein wenig Richtung Post-Rock gehen würde, war ich sehr gespannt darauf und konnte mir eigentlich eher wenig vorstellen wie es dann wohl fertiggestellt klingen würde. Gestern hab ich endlich das fertige Album bekommen und war positiv überrascht wie gut die Ideen vom Fünfergespann umgesetzt wurden.

Sie klingen immer noch wie Anoroc, viel Gesang, tolle Stimme, guter Text, immer noch sehr funkiger grungiger Rock. In Sachen Song-Arrangement hat sich meiner Meinung nach am Meisten getan. Es wirkt alles um einiges durchdachter! Die Songs schaffen eine gute Atmosphäre in die man eintauchen kann. Bei vielen Songs hört man definitiv den Einfluss des Post-Rocks raus. Samples wurden eingebaut, Triolen, experimentelle Drumrhythmen, Trompetenspiel (gespielt von Gregor Lehner) etc. etc...

Dennoch haben sie es sich nicht nehmen lassen bei ihren Wurzeln zu bleiben und akustische, funkig rockige, grungige Songs oder einfach alles quer gemischt aufzunehmen.

Ich finde den Mix sehr einzigartig und würde „The Completion Of Our Exaggeration“ jedem Musikliebhaber empfehlen, da es einfach wahnsinnig viel gute Ideen beinhaltet und mit keiner Sekunde langweilig wird, wenn man sich darauf einlässt und sich auf die Details konzentriert.

Alex, Philipp, Robert, Manuel und Roman haben sich hier echt ins Zeug gelegt und ernten großen Respekt von mir.

PS.: Wie schon erwähnt werden sie morgen (27.11.2009) ihre Cd live vorstellen. Dies findet im „Festsaal der Konrad Fichtl Hauptschule (HS1)“ in Wattens statt. Beginn: 20 Uhr. Der Eintritt ist FREI!

Our friends from Anoroc finally start through with their latest effort, which will be presented live tomorrow - available here for free today! I was told a lot of influences beforehand. Like I stated here, it was very difficult for me to describe their first album "AntiGONE", and after they let me know that the new album would have it's post-rockish moments, I was very excited to hear the finished work. I got it yesterday and I was blown away by how the five guys played their ideas out.

They still sound like Anoroc - lots of vocals, great voice, great lyrics, funky and grungy rock music. For me, their song arrangements underwent the most notable improvement. It all sounds more thought-out! And with some songs you can really hear the post-rock influence: tremolo picking, samples, experimental drum patterns, trumpets, and so on.

Still they didn't neglect their roots and record acoustic, funky rocky songs, or everything mixed up.

This mix is what makes them unique and I'd recommend "The Completion Of Our Exaggeration" to every music-lover, because it contains lots of great ideads and never fails to amaze if you let it happen and concentrate on the details.

Alex, Philipp, Robert, Manuel and Roman have really pushed themselves and I show the greatest respect to them.

Satory - The Japanese Beast (2009)

In letzter Zeit bekommen wir immer mehr Anfragen aus Österreich. Anfragen um die wir sehr froh sind. Die Musikszene wird bei uns nicht sonderlich unterstützt, sofern es kein Schlager oder Volksmusik ist. Das wollen wir supporten und entdecken somit immer mehr, dass Österreich mehr zu bieten hat, als Berge, Schnitzel und Skandale.

Satory ist eine junge aufstrebende Band aus Wien, Tirol und Salzburg. Als Einflüsse geben sie Isis, Jakob, Mogwai, Russian Circles, Tool, Cult of Luna, Cog, DeadSoul Tribe, Truckfighters, A Perfect Circle, Mastodon, KoRn, Sigur Rós, Radiohead, Incubus und Nine Inch Nails an. Meiner Meinung nach sind die 2 prägendsten ISIS und TOOL die sich in jeder Sekunde von Satorys Songs widerspiegeln. Der Gesang erinnert teilweise sehr stark an einen Maynard James Keenan, manchmal Aaron Turner, die Arrangements definitiv ein Gemisch aus beiden, die Bassläufe ähneln sehr einem Jeff Caxide. Dennoch schaffen es Satory ihren eigenen Charakter zu wahren und ein eigenständiges Werk namens „The Japanese Beast“ auf die Beine zu stellen, das den Zuhörer in seinen Bann zieht. Hört einfach selbst und macht euch ein Bild!

Recently we are getting more and more good stuff from austria. We are very glad about that. The music-scene isn’t that good supported here. Except folk-music. We want to support the underground-scene and so are discovering more and more that austria has more than mountains, viennese Schnitzel and scandals.

Satory is a young ambitious band from vienna, tyrol and salzburg. Their influences are Isis, Jakob, Mogwai, Russian Circles, Tool, Cult of Luna, Cog, DeadSoul Tribe, Truckfighters, A Perfect Circle, Mastodon, KoRn, Sigur Rós, Radiohead, Incubus and Nine Inch Nails. For me ISIS and TOOL are the most formative ones. The vocals are reminding me on Maynard James Keenan, sometimes Aaron Turner, the Arrangements are a mix between Isis and Tool, the bass riffs could be Jeff Caxide in person. Anyhow, the guys from Satory are keeping their own character and are able to satisfy you with their work on „The Japanese Beast“. Just listen to it and obtain your opinion!

Sundust - Sundust (EP) (2007)

Stoner Rock? Was ist das? Für mich ist es ein Mix aus eingängigen, tiefergestimmten Gitarrenriffs gepaart mit schnellen, dann auch wieder langsamen, treibenden, abwechslungsreichen Drumrhythmen und einer Stimme die Kraft im Sinne von Unzerstörbarkeit ausstrahlt.

Genau diese Eigenschaften hat die Band Sundust aus Wien. Dass sie für diese Musik ihren Kopf ins Feuer legen würden, beweist ihre 2007 erschienene EP „Sundust“. Sie ist voller Energie und lässt dem Hörer kaum Zeit durchzuatmen. Die Nackenmuskulatur wird auf ihr Letztes zur Probe gestellt. Bei knapp 28 Minuten ist dies durchaus zu verkraften und schafft kaum Verspannungen ;) . Das ideale Werk für eine Route-66-Tour!

Teilweise erinnern mich Sundust sehr an Dirty Sun Jazz, die auch aus Österreich stammen und deren EP auch bald hier gepostet wird. Hört es euch näher an, es lohnt sich!

What is Stoner Rock? For me it is the perfect mix between catchy, downtuned guitarriffs paired with fast, sometimes slow, pushing, diversified drum-rhythms and a voice that moderates force! Force in terms of indestructibleness!

Sundust from vienna definitely owns these characteristics. That these guys just live for this genre demonstrates their `07 released record „Sundust“. It is full of energy and the listener just has to move his neck-muscles on and on. It’s the perfect release for a trip onto the Route-66!

In some parts Sundust reminds me very much on Dirty Sun Jazz which also comes from austria and will be reviewed on this blog soon. Listen to this. It's worth it!

The Great Disappointment - The Great Disappointment (2009)

Post-Rock, Screamo, Hardcore? Es ist wirklich schwer The Great Disappointment einzuordnen. Zu sehr springen sie auf ihrem gleichnamigen Album von einer Stilrichtung in die Andere, überspringen ein paar um dann doch noch auf sie zurückzugreifen. Das verblüffende dabei: Es gelingt ihnen sehr gut diesen Genre-Mix zu einem Ganzen zu verbinden. So facettenreich der Sound ist, so facettenreich präsentieren sich alle beteiligten Musiker. Vom Gesang der teils in Geschrei gipfelt, teils melodiös daher kommt bis hin zur die Gitarrenarbeit die von Post-Rock typischen Triolen bis hin zum gefrickelten Hardcore Riff scheinbar alles bietet.

Der Einstieg kommt mit „Himsa Pt. 1 & 2“. Sehr ruhig geht es zur Sache. Post-Rock prangert über der schönen Melodie. Sehr langsam steigert sich das Stück. Im Hintergrund Schreie. Spannung baut sich auf, wann wird der Hund endlich von der Leine gelassen?! Dann ist es so weit: Drückende Gitarren, hämmernder Rhythmus und brachiales Geschrei aber sofort wieder der Wechsel zurück zur klaren Melodie.

Weiter geht’s mit „Walls“. Der Einstieg überrascht, klarer Gesang in Emo/Indie Manier, ein eingängiges Riff. Insgesamt direkter und einfacher als der Opener. Auch hier wird wieder Geschrei eingesetzt, jedoch dezenter, der Gesang überwiegt bei dem eher kurzen Stück.

„Of Life And Afterlife“ kommt da schon wieder wesentlich brachialer daher. Das Schlagzeug macht richtig Druck und das Geschrei keift einem nur so entgegen. Auch die Gitarrenarbeit erinnert nun wieder eher an Hardcore. Tolles Break! Zwischendrin schön gezupfte Melodien untermalt mit Geschrei – Wechsel vom Hardcore zum Screamo und zurück.

„The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“ ist lediglich ein überleitendes Rauschen zum wieder geradliniger, popiger anmutenden „Flesh & Bones“, das mit schönen Soundspielereien aufwartet und mich dabei in eine kleine Traumwelt entführt. Mehrstimmiger Gesang rundet das wohlig warme, euphorische Gefühl ab, dass einem dieser Song vermittelt: „We are only flesh&bones!“ So ist`s, die Welt ist schön J.

„Thy Kingdom Come“ ist – Überraschung – wieder völlig anders. Der Gesang mutet fast schon psychedelisch an, erinnert an John Frusciante. Wieder ein Bruch und ab geht die Post! The Great Disappointment lieben das Hin- und Herspringen auch innerhalb der Songs, zerstören diese dadurch aber nicht.

„Le’olam lo shuv“ entführt einen wieder in eine Traumwelt. Ruhig, atmosphärisch baut es eine Landschaft um einen herum - keine Ahnung warum das bei mir immer eine Unterwasserlandschaft ist (trotz minutenlangem Vogelgezwitscher am Schluss des Songs) aber vielleicht verbinde ich Delay einfach mit Wasser. Hier wird wieder wunderschöner Post-Rock geboten.

„Our Dreams Are The Light“ & „…That Will Lead Us Home” bilden eine Einheit oder eher ein Geschwister-Paar mit unterschiedlichem Temperament. „Our Dreams Are The Light“ macht da weiter wo „Le’olam lo shuv“ aufhört. Verspielt, verträumt. Nach der kurzen Träumerei geht’s direkt zum harten „…That Will Lead Us Home“ weiter. Hier wird wieder geschrien, gerifft, gewalzt was das Zeug hält. Wechsel baby! Auch hier kommt dieser nicht zu kurz.

Das anschließende „Dorothy“ fügt sich in das Konzept des ganzen Albums ein. Ein freudiges über alle Grenzen Springen.

The Great Disappointment schaffen es trotz verschiedenster Stil Einflüsse ein rundes und einmaliges Gesamtwerk zu kreieren. Dabei wissen sie in allen Bereichen gänzlich zu überzeugen, großartig! Jedoch kein Album zum Nebenbeihören.

Post-Rock, Screamo, Hardcore? It’s kind of hard to allocate The Great Disappointment. The sound of the selftitled album is influenced by many genres. They combine these influences to an integrated whole. Very multifarious stuff. The vocals shouting and also melodious and the guitartracks reaches from postrockish triplets up to Hardcore-Riffs and everything in between.

The Intro is „Himsa Pt. 1 & 2“. A very silent and beautiful melody-based postrockish song. Slowly growing. Shouts in the background. The arrangement is based on thrilling you more and more. When does the breakout start? Here it comes: Oppressive guitars, hammering rhythm and brute shouts but right away a change to the clean melody again. Splendid.

Continuing with „Walls“. The introduction surprises, clean emo-indie-typical vocals and a catchy Riff. All in all more straight and more simply than the opener. Shouts again but the clean vocals overbalance this track.

„Of Life And Afterlife“ is a more brute song. The drums are really hard and the shouts very corrosive. The guitars are once again reminding me of hardcore-based songs. A great break! In between nice picked melodies with shouts again – This song is a constant changeover among Hardcore and Screamo.

„The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“ is a nice noisy interlude to „Flesh & Bones“. „Flesh & Bones“ is convincing with beautiful soundscapes. You’ll feel like being kidnapped into a dream world. Additionally to this, the several-voices-singing will upgrade the comfortly warm feeling of this song. You will never want to leave this place. „We are only flesh & bones!“ That’s right, the world is beautiful J.

„Thy Kingdom Come“ is a surprise once again. Very different than the other songs. The voice is a little bit psychedelic. It reminds of John Frusciante.

„Le’olam lo shuv“ is once again kidnapping you into a dream world. Silent, atmospheric, building a landscape of peace around you. No idea why i always have underwater-feelings with such tunes (aside from the twittering of the birds at the end of the song). Beautiful Post-Rock-Song.

The Great Disappointment manage it despite of the different influences to create a perfect circle of tunes. In addition to that they really know how to overwhelm the listener in all categories. Really great stuff! An album that efforts many time.

I Not Dance - So You Think You Can Stop Me And Spit In My Eyes (2008)

Was kann man zu dieser LP sagen außer, dass sie großartig ist? I Not Dance das sind 3 Kerls aus Österreich die ihr Handwerk einfach perfekt verstehen. Eingängige Melodien, drückende Riffs gepaart mit teils geschrienen, teils gesprochenen Vocals. Screamo vom Feinsten! Vor Allem live beeindrucken die 3 mit ihrer Präsenz und dem Sound den sie aus ihren Instrumenten kitzeln. Musikalisch tu ich mir schwer die Band zu vergleichen oder zu beschreiben. Klar, es gibt viele Screamo Bands und es gibt bestimmt auch einige die I Not Dance ähnlich klingen doch die Jungs haben`s einfach drauf und schnell ihre eigene Identität gefunden. Die Riffs sind mächtig - sehr mächtig - und das obwohl dahinter nur 1 Gitarre und 1 Bass stehen. Verblüffend wie die 2 einen Sound kreieren den manche Band nicht mal mit 2-3 Gitarren plus Bass schafft. Das Schlagzeug tut den Rest und haut richtig rein, reißt mit, akzentuiert die Melodien. Die ruhigen Passagen sind wunderschön mit flüssigen Melodien, die ein bisschen zum Träumen verleiten aber schnell wieder von mächtigen Walzen unterstützt von brachialem Geschrei abgelöst werden. Samples ergänzen das Gesamtwerk und bringen es zur Perfektion. Da wären neben Reden z.B. auch Applaus, welcher geschickt als Rhythmusmittel eingesetzt wird. I Not Dance bedienen sich keiner Klischees. Sie müssen keine Verzweiflung, Trostlosigkeit und Weltuntergang predigen wie es so oft im Screamo und Hardcore Bereich gemacht wird. Sie schaffen es Wucht und Emotion in einer einzigartigen Weise zu kombinieren.

Um dieser Beweihräucherung ein Ende zu machen sei einfach noch mal gesagt:

Grandiose Scheibe, grandiose Band. Punkt!

What can I say about this release in addition to that it’s simply awesome? I Not Dance are 3 guys from austria which just understand their handcraft perfectly. Catchy melodies and oppressive riffs matching with shouted or spoken vocals. Screamo at one’s best! First of all they impress with their live-performance and the neat tunes they are tickling out of their instruments. It’s kind of hard to describe or compare this band. For sure there are masses of Screamo-bands out there but in my opinion I Not Dance stands for its own. The riffs are abundant - very abundant – although there is only 1 guitar and 1 bass-guitar attending. It’s just amazing how these 2 guitarists are able to create such awesome sounds. Most of the bands out there aren’t nearly able to get to this level with 2-3 guitars plus bass-guitar. The drummig lines completes these melodies for 100%. The silent parts are very beautiful with liquid melodies inducing day-dreams but at all times they are detached quickly by abundant guitar-walls supported by brutal shouts. The samples fit very good into the arrangements. In addition to spoken-word-samples there are also appearing applause-samples which are very clever converted into rhythm-beats. I Not Dance don’t need to fool the listeners with despair, bleakness or apocalypse to reach them. They just make it to combine impact with emotion without these things.

Terrific release, terrific band. Fullstop!

We are sorry for the absence!

We have been very busy for the last weeks preparing for & doing some gigs with our project Our Ceasing Voice. There are about 5 Reviews done and we will prepare them for posting within the next days. Please stay tuned.

To compensate the lack of posts, we did some live-video-recordings of our shows. For about 6 weeks or so, we have a new drummer (Pago) because the old one (Andi) we were rehearsing with for several months left us. Therefore we had to adjust all the drumming of our songs to fit with Pago's style. It' been a very short time, but Pago did it without batting an eye. You will hear a big difference compared to our EP (written without drummer) and to the new song "Highway Lights" (recorded with Andi). To us, Pago is the perfect drummer for the band and a unique person. His extraordinary drumming brought new ideas and new feelings into our songs. We are all glad that he is a part of us and Our Ceasing Voice is complete again.

The sound on the cuts isn't that good but i think it's quite enjoyable. Check it out.

Doomina - 290809 (EP) (2009)

Ganz weit abseits ihrer üblichen Wege wandern Doomina auf ihrer neuen EP, schlicht und einfach 290809 betitelt. Im Gegensatz zum Stonerdoom, den man sonst so von den Kärntnern erwartet, bieten Daniel (der ohne die anderen drei Doominas unterwegs ist) ist dieses Mal mit der Unterstützung von Marian P. von Cleave einen First-Take-Studio-Jam, der am 29.08.2009 zwischen 0 und 6 Uhr entstanden ist. Der Track heißt Hollow und dauert genau 19 Minuten und 34 Sekunden.

Das sind dann 19 Minuten und 34 Sekunden pure Experimentierfreude mit vielen Samples, programmierten, monotonen Drums und diesen fantastischen Gitarrenmelodien, die im Alleingang den Song tragen. Würde man versuchen, dieses Lied in ein Genre einzuordnen, so würde ich Psychedelic Post Rock wählen, aber dieses Schubladendenken wird dieser EP einfach nicht gerecht. Diese EP ist wahrscheinlich der Versuch, einmal aus dem musikalischen Alltagstrott auszubrechen und einmal etwas auszuprobieren, was auf einer herkömmlichen Veröffentlichung wohl kaum Platz finden würde.

Und genau das zeigt mir, dass Daniel und Marian wirklich gute Musiker sind und vor allem den Mut haben, zwischen den Stühlen zu stehen und vielleicht die Fans mal vor den Kopf zu stoßen mit einem absolut untypischen Release... so, wie es z.B. auch schon Radiohead mit Kid A oder Disillusion mit Gloria gemacht haben. Meine Herren, ich ziehe den Hut vor Ihnen und Ihrer Experimentierfreudigkeit und Ihnen, werter Leser und werte Leserin, kann ich nur empfehlen, sich auf dieses Experiment einzulassen. Sie werden es ganz sicher nicht bereuen! Die Covergestaltung wurde wieder einmal unter Einfluss des Songs von Reinhold Rittinger in die Hand genommen.

On Doomina’s new EP they are walking afar offside of their general style of creating music. The EP is easily called 290809. In contrast to Stonerdoom which is normally expected in relation to Carinthia, Daniel (Doomina) is working together with Marian P. (Cleave). This is a First-Take-Studio-Jam started at 00:00 on the 29th of August `09. It consists of one track called Hollow and is about 20 minutes long.

20 minutes of pure delight in experimentation with a lot of samples, programmed, monotone drums and all of those amazing guitartunes, that are single-handedly wearing the whole song.
If one is on to categorize it into a genre i would choose Psychedelic Rock. But i don’t think that this cerebration is deserved for this EP. For me this EP is the effort to break off the daily grind, trying new stuff, that possibly wouldn’t take place on an usual release.

This is exactly that what shows me that Daniel and Marian are really good musicians and that they have the bravery to stand between the chairs, maybe affronting the fans a little bit with this atypical Recording... just like Radiohead did with Kid A or Disillusion with Gloria. I’m saluting to Daniel and Marian and their delight in experimentation. Get involved into this experiment! You won’t be disappointed! The Artwork is once again the creative hand of Reinhold Rittinger influenced by this Song.

Doomina - Adventures Of Dope (EP) (2006)

Ja Mann, das ist Stonerdoom. Doomina haben mir ja mit dem 2008er Release March On, Dead Man schon einreden können, dass in Kärnten eine neue Wüstenmetropole entstehen könnte. Jetzt weiß ich endgültig, dass Doomina Sand zum Frühstück essen und diesen mit Whiskey runterspülen.

Dies hier ist das erste Demo (4 Wochen nach Bandgründung eingespielt!) dieser noch sehr jungen Band aus dem Jahre 2006 und klingt in meinen Ohren noch etwas feiner. Was nichts Schlechtes heißen soll. Die Songs sind nur etwas doomlastiger und treffen eben meinen Geschmack haargenau am Genital, während March On, Dead Man noch ganz knapp vorbeizielte. Die Songs sind wirklich sehr dreckig, und siehe da, sogar Gesang wurde auf dem 3tten Track ("A Grave For The Masses") verwendet und das im Stile von Suma. "Let The Churches Burn" kam ja auch '06 raus. Wer von wem abgeschaut hat, ist also offen zu lassen. Oder einfach nur Zufall. Es klingt auf alle Fälle bei beiden Bands extrem fett und vernichtend! Für mich ist Doomina auf alle Fälle eine der Geheimtipps mit der Brandmarke "Made in Austria"! Das Cover wurde für den Re-Release von niemand Geringeren als Reinhold Rittinger entworfen, der auch schon die Fotografien für Our Ceasing Voice lieferte.

PS.: Der 2te Track "... And The We Will Rise" klingt wie der ältere Bruder von Kylesa's "Running Red"!!!!!!

Yeah man, this is Stonerdoom. With their 2008 release March On, Dead Man Doomina have already talked myself into believing that Carinthia might have a desert-metropolis soon. Now I know for sure that Doomina have sand for breakfast and wash it down with whiskey.

This is the first Demo (recorded 4 weeks after formation!) of a very young band, released in 2006 and it even sounds a little more refined in my opinion - certainly not a bad thing. The songs have a more doomy character and hit my taste straigth into the genitals, whereas March On, Dead Man aimed a little off target. The songs are really dirty, and even Suma-like vocals find their way onto the 3rd track. ("A Grave For The Masses") As it is generally known "Let The Churches Burn" was released in 2006 as well - who copied whom is a question without answer. Maybe it was a coincidence. However, it sounds great and devastating for both bands! For me Doomina is a true insider's tip - trademark: "Made in Austria"! The Cover for this Re-Release is made by Reinhold Rittinger, who also made the photographs for Our Ceasing Voice.

PS.: The second track "... And The We Will Rise" sounds like the older brother of Kylesa's "Running Red"!!!!

Slon - Antenne (2009)

Andrei hat mir das Album schon vor geraumer Zeit zukommen lassen und es tut mir Leid, dass ich nicht eher dazu kam es hier im Blog zu posten. Vor Allem, weil er auch im Forum sehr aktiv dabei ist.

Auf jeden Fall zeigt diese Wiener Band, die sich ebenso dem Post-Rock verschrieben haben, ein sehr solides Werk namens Antenne. Was bei Ihnen sehr im Vordergrund steht, und das hört man schon nach ein paar Tönen, dass sie sehr viel Wert auf experimentelle Songstrukturen legen. Teilweise würde ich sie dem Math-Rock zuordnen, manchmal jedoch wiederum dem Jazz.
Genau das ist das Tolle an Slon. Nichts währt wirklich lang. Die Gefühle ändern sich von Sekunde zu Sekunde. Eine Achterbahn der Instrumentalmusik. Es ist sehr schwierig eine Schublade zu finden und ich denke sie wollten genau dies in der Schreibphase des Albums erreichen. Das haben sie auf alle Fälle erreicht! Antenne gibt es aber leider nur zu kaufen. Als kleinen Trost kann man jedoch die alte EP Jelenka gratis laden. Viel Spaß!

Some time ago Andrei sent this album my way and I'm really sorry that I couldn't post it earlier on the blog. Particularly because he's actively around our forums.

Anyway, this band from Vienna, that dedicated themselves to post-rock recorded a very solid album called Antenne. Even after a few notes one can hear that experimental song-structures are the bands primary goal. At times I'd label them math-rock, other times I'd call it Jazz.
And it's exactly that, what is great about Slon - nothing lasts for long. Feelings change from second to second, a rollercoaster of instrumental music. It is very hard to pigeonhole the band and I think that they bore this in mind when writing the album. Mission accomplished!

Unfortunately, there is no free download for Antenne, it can only be bought. As a little consolitation you can still download their older EP Jelenka for free. Have fun!
