"Schon wieder ein Live-Release vom Herrn Reznor?" mag sich der eine oder andere jetzt Fragen, ist es doch erst eineinhalb Jahre her, dass uns der Klangzauberer
Beside You In Time schenkte, und das natürlich in HD. Nun stellt sich weiter die Frage, wenn ich
All That Could Have Been und
Beside You In Time schon kenne, brauche ich dann Another Version Of The Truth überhaupt? Meine Antwort lautet "Ja!" und zwar weil es sich bei dieser "Veröffentlichung" um ein ganz besonderes Projekt handelt.
Das Jahr 2008 war ein ganz besonderes Jahr für die Nine Inch Nails: Erfüllung des Vertrages mit Universal, Online-Veröffentlichung der Alben
Ghosts I-IV und
The Slip, ausverkaufte Hallen auf der "Lights In The Sky"-Tour. Und genau auf dieser Tour haben dutzende von Fans die letzte Show gefilmt. Das Problem an der Sache war, dass das Material offiziell Universal gehört. Deshalb wurden einfach die 400GB (!) Rohmaterial kurzerhand am 07.01.2009 geleakt... und zwar von Herrn Reznor selbst (Zitat:
"The internet is full of surprises these days.").
Schnell hat sich dann eine Gruppe von Menschen dazu bereiterklärt, das Rohmaterial zu editieren und die erst Fan-DVD zu kreieren (
thisoneisonus.org). Vorab gibt es ein Audio-Release, das ungefähr 4,5 Stunden an Livemitschnitten der Tour beinhaltet, aufgespaltet in zwei Alben: The Gift und Las Vegas. Bei Las Vegas handelt es sich um das komplette Las Vegas Konzert, wie es von den Fans aufgezeichnet wurde und The Gift ist, wie es der Name schon sagt, ein Geschenk von Herrn Reznor an seine Fans.
Geboten wird auf beiden Zusammenstellungen ein Querschnitt über alle Schaffensphasen der Nine Inch Nails, performt vom wohl besten NIN-Lineup, das es jemals gegeben hat... und das hört man den Aufnahmen gewaltig an. So tight und kraftvoll war keine der bis jetzt
veröffentlichten Live-Aufnahmen. Die Las Vegas-Show ist zwar von der Soundqualität her der von Trent selber aufgenommenen und gemasterten The Gift unterlegen (trotzdem sehr gute Bootleg-Qualität), hat aber eine bessere Songauswahl (meiner Meinung nach).

Vessel, wohingegen Las Vegas mit
The Great Destroyer,
Reptile und einer Ansprache zum Tourende von Trent aufwarten kann... und
God Given und
The Wretched tausche ich persönlich jeder Zeit gegen
The Great Destroyer (mein Lieblingstrack von der
Year Zero) und
Reptile (einer der besten Tracks von der
Downward Spiral) ein.

All That Could Have Been and
Beside You In Time, does
Another Version Of The Truth even have something new to offer?". My answer would be "Yes!" in this instance, because this is no odinary release.
The year 2008 was a very special one for NIN: last LP under Universal,
Ghosts I-IV and
The Slip released online, sold out shows on the Lights In The Sky tour. And on this tour, a dozen fans have recorded the final show... the problem is, that oficially, this material still belongs to Universal. That's why 400GB (!) of raw material were leaked into the internet... by Mr Reznor himself (
"The internet is full of surprises these days.").
Lots of people downloaded this stuff and started editing, thus creating the first fan DVD (
thisoneisonus.org). In advance they released the the audio material, which is about 4,5 hours in length and contains two seperate CDs: The Gift and Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the final show of the tour recorded by the fans and The Gift is, as its name says, a gift by Trent Reznor to his fans.
The setlist contains songs from every phase of the Nine Inch Nails with a perfect balance between old and new, performed by the best NIN lineup that has ever been... and that is exactly what you hear, when you listen to this record: never before have they sounded so powerful, never before have they played so tightly. Although the Las Vegas release has an inferior soundquality (but still good quality) compared to The Gift, which was recorded and mastered by Trent himself, it has the superior songs:
The Gift has
God Given,
The Wretched and
Vessel, whereas Las Vegas has
The Great Destroyer,
Reptile and a speech by Mr Reznor, about the end of the tour, this concert being Josh Freeses last with NIN and so on... and I personally would trade
God Given and
The Wretched for
The Great Destroyer (my favourite on Year Zero) and
Reptile (one of my all time favourites) in a heartbeat.
