„Thoughts In A Bag“ zeigt gleich zu Beginn welch Potential in „The Invention of the Hole“ von Sleep is Wrong steckt. Chorartiger Gesang und eine hintergründige Gitarre machen den Anfang, nach den ersten gesungenen Zeilen folgt ein Break welches den Übergang zum folgenden Riff gibt. Der Song erinnert an Bands wie Porcupine Tree, Katatonia mit einem Hauch Opeth. Diese Vergleiche muss Sleep is Wrong dabei in keiner Weise scheuen gerade weil die Musik stets eine eigene Identität behält und keinesfalls besagte Bands kopiert. Der Refrain „Thank god I know that William Blake was wrong…“ regt wie die gesamten Lyrics des Albums zum Nachlesen selbiger an. Der Mittelteil wird wieder von gediegenen Gitarrenmelodien beherrscht die in Kombination mit dem kanonartigen Gesang eine mythische Stimmung heraufbeschwören bevor ein Gewitter in bester Prog – Manier los bricht.
Durch „Remember This“ zieht sich eine schon fast funkig anmutende Gitarrenmelodie begleitet von mehrstimmigem Gesang. Unterbrochen wird diese Melodie durch das Riff des Refrains. Beeindruckend hier: Die Drums nach dem ersten Refrain. Hier wird mit Rhythmik gespielt. Teils wirk es als ob Gesang, Gitarre und Schlagzeug auseinander driften aber nur für einen Moment. Auch hier wird sich gekonnt im Progressive Genre bewegt.
Mit „If“ wird es nun ruhiger. Eine wunderschöne Melodie begleitet von sanftem Gesang begleitet den Hörer. Nach der ersten Strophe kommt ein Gänsehautmoment. Eine wunderschöne Melodie auf der klassischen Gitarre untermalt von dem mehrstimmig gesungenen Refrain. Es ist fast als ob sich dunkle Bäume teilen und den Blick auf eine wunderschöne Lichtung im Morgenlicht frei geben. „If“ ist wunderschön sanft, dabei melancholisch und trotzdem ein bisschen bedrohlich.
„War“ beginnt ganz anders als man anhand des Titels vermuten will. Eine fröhliche Melodie die schnell vom Gesang einer prägnanten Baseline und schöner akustischer Begleitung abgelöst werden. Auch hier ist Sleep ist Wrong“ ein überragender Mittelteil gelungen und besticht mit grandioser Arbeit an der akustischen Gitarre was letztendlich in einem wunderschönen Solo zum Ausklang gipfelt. Bei „War“ gelingt der Wechsel zwischen härteren Passagen mit E-Gitarre und ruhigen akustischen Parts in Perfektion.
In „Dreams In Slow Motion“ hat nun die akustische Gitarre vollends die Oberhand gewonnen. Das Schlagzeug kreiert – ganz dem Titel entsprechend – einen schläfrigen Rhythmus. Das ganze wird begleitet von einer schönen Melodie und sanftem Gesang. Bei „Dreams in Slow Motion“ ist der Titel Programm: Zurücklehnen und Augen schließen.
„Noise and Eternal Sleep“ reißen einen nun jedoch schnell wieder aus den Träumen. Unterton Gesang und ein schnell einsetzendes, drückendes Riff erzeugen eine Wand die einem vorgesetzt wird. Doch diese harte, fast apokalyptische Stimmung wird durch einen verzweifelten Refrain gelockert nur um dann wieder zurück zu kehren. Hier kommen noch einmal deutliche Metal Einflüsse heraus, die allerdings immer wieder von ruhigen Passagen unterbrochen werden.
Der Abschluss des Albums „For The Love of Cthulu“ ist hingegen wieder ruhig gewählt. Ein akustisches Stück mit ruhigem, irisch anmutendem Gesang. „And if I were you - I`d rather stay awake…“
Das erste was mir zu „Sleep is Wrong“ eingefallen ist als ich „Thougts In A Bag“ den Opener des Albums auf der Myspace Seite hörte war: „ Das soll einer allein gemacht haben?“ Ja! Also fast an den Drums saß sein professioneller Klöppelschwinger. Der Rest wurde im Alleingang eingespielt und aufgenommen und was dabei raus kam braucht sich nicht verstecken. Sleep is wrong orientiert sich am Progressive Metal mit einer gehörigen Portion Melancholie untermalt von akustischen Passagen und mehrstimmigem Gesang. Es ist schon ein bisschen gemein, dass es Menschen gibt die alles können: Tolle Lieder komponieren, super ihr/e Instrument/e spielen und dann auch noch eine tolle Stimme haben - umso schöner wenn dabei ein solch wunderbares Album entsteht. Absolute Hörempfehlung!

Right in the beginning "Thoughts In A Bag" shows the potential of Sleep is Wrong's album "The Invention of the Hole". Just as choirs and guitars left in the background are making their start, a break which leads into the next riff, follows after a few vocal lines. The song reminds of bands like Porcupine Tree and Katatonia, with a whiff of Opeth. However, Sleep is wrong can really be proud of these comparisons, as the music always keeps it's own identity, while not only copying the aforementioned bands. The chorus - "Thank god I know that William Blake was wrong..." encourages the listener to read the lyrics in the booklet - until the mid-part is led by guitar-melodies again, which team up with canon-like vocals, evoking an amazing Prog-storm.
The guitar-melody which is apparent throughout "remember this" might even seem a little on the funky side. The melody, guided by several voices, is then interrupted by the chorus riff. The drums right after the first chorus are especially impressive - this is what they call "playing with rhythm". At times it seems that vocals, guitars and drums are drifting apart, but the band manages to play progressive at it's finest again.
"If" shows Sleep is Wrong's calmer side. A wonderful melody teams up with soft vocals and accompanies the listener. A few seconds later, after the first verse, goosebumps arise. Classical guitars and vocals seem to seperate dark trees, giving view to the wonderful clearing in the first hours of the day. "If" is beautifully soft and melancholic, while still maintaining a threatening atmosphere.
"War" starts off totally different than the title suggests. The happy melody will soon be replaced by vocals over a concise bassline and acoustic guitars. Again, Sleep is Wrong created an exceptional middle part of the song, impressing through excellent acoustic guitar playing, which will then peak in a terrific solo. "War" shows the perfect change between hard, distorted parts and their calm acoustic counterparts.
Still, acoustic guitars have taken over fully on "dreams in slow motion", while the drums - according to the title - give a gentle, dozy rhythm. All in all, the song title fits very good: Lean back and close your eyes!
Rapidly, "noise and eternal eternal sleep" will wake you up again. The wall, which is created by the oppressive riffing, and the apocalyptical atmosphere are then torn down by a desperate chorus, just to come back sooner or later. You will hear the band's metal influences on this track a lot, while interrupting them by quiet parts again and again.
The album closer "for the love of cthulu" is a quiet song once again. An acoustic piece with quiet, irish-like vocals. "and if I were you - I'd rather stay awake..."
The first thing which came to my mind when I heard "thoughts in a bag" - the album opener - on their myspace page was: This should be one guy on his own? Yes! Well, almost. The drums were recorded by a different drummer. The rest was recorded single-handedly and doesn't need to hide. Sleep is Wrong takes it's influences from Progressive Metal, with a good shot of melancholy, accompanied by acoustic parts and multi-voice vocals. It's a little cruel, that there're people out there who can do it all: write amazing songs, play their instrumentS perfectly and have a great voice. A must-listen for everyone.
