Sahara Surfers - Sonar Pilot (2011)

Quote: (thesirenssound.com) "For the last 4 years the Innsbruck band, Sahara Surfers, have been bringing rock from the desert to the Tyrolean alps. Their debut album “Spacetrip on a Paper Plane” very quickly earned them recognition on the stoner rock scene. The album transformed them from a blip on the radar to one of the most popular stoner rock bands in Austria. The skillful combination of psychedelic hooks and driving riffs typical to the genre, accented by the not so genre-typical female singer, immediately struck a nerve in the scene and has landed on open ears both in Austria and abroad. With their second album, Sonar Pilot, the band has fine-tuned sound and developed a style they can call their own – old school stoner rock spiced with a healthy portion of alternative rock, a splash of psychedelic rock and a pinch of good old Metal resulting in a rich dish not typically seen on a Tyrolean menu.

In [ Sonar Pilot ] Sahara Surfers brings a devil-may-care mash-up of Stoner-rock and Psychedelic rock which feel like a breath of fresh air. The 90’s and the 20’s had been dominated by an array of new genres and cross between major rock elements which disintegrate the isolation of some never-ending meltdown. That said it is high time that somebody launch something stone and concrete that simply bring the good times and give you this rejuvenating feel.

As varied and dynamic as [ Spacetrip On A Paper Plane ] “Sahara Surfers” simply burst out with energy at its very best. [ Sonar Pilot ] maintain a divine momentum which rolled this follow-up [ LP ] to instant glory. Musically, it draws deeply from diverse pools, echoes of 70s hard rock reverberating alongside grunge and stoner-rock sounds.

From electric vibes to stoner riffs, Laid back head nodding motion to downright quirky notes [ Solar Pilot ] remain a colourful title that’s near impossible to dislike. By all means CHECK IT OUT… and if you haven’t had a go on [ Spacetrip On A Paper Plane ] which I seriously doubt, then its where you might want to start. [ QOTSA ] ~ [ Bardo Pond ] ~ [ Grails ] ~ [ Deftones ] and the likes fans all the way."

The Grand Astoria - Omnipresence (2011)

Info: "THE GRAND ASTORIA was formed in April 2009 by guitarist and singer Kamille Sharapodinov from Saint-Petersburg. His previous band, NEVERSMILE gave him lots of live gigging and studio recording experience. So, it took his new band only a few months to produce the debut eponymous album and win the audience in both Russian capitals with explosive, loud and fuzzy music which they billed as "stoner punk"."

Huata - Open The Gates Of Shambhala (EP) (2009)

Quote: "Started on december 2006 in Lannion, and after many line up changes we were up to gigs, on september 2007. We recorded in January, 2008 a model of three fragments with the help of Guillaume Giquel, and Kevin from Abnorm. The mixing was made by Julien Hérou. The sound is regrettably not representative of what we looked for. We recorded in July the EP "Open the gates of Shambala" mixed by KKP (sound of Warsaw Was Raw, Quartier Rouge, CP, ((remote))... ). All of our productions are free downloadable, free of charge.

We sold the soul of our music to Satan our lord and master and to spread his dark word among the laymen, we dive in the heart of the occult part of western history, and call in the any power of the DOOM. Sahara Surfers - Spacetrip On A Paper Plane (2010)

Quote from myspace: "desert rock for wet moments. Founded in November 2007 in well-known metropolis Schlitters in the Ziller Valley the band met to celebrate its passion for stoner rock. From the beginning it was clear to everybody that this band is facing world wide success. It's just all about being patient and getting stoned to make the time pass 'til then. As a prospectively world-wide known bunch of rockstars we had to move to big city Innsbruck to underline these ambitions. That's where we are now working on new stuff and where we are experimenting with new sounds and our bodies."

Sahara Surfers are great friends of mine and i want to thank them for being musicians of passion. It's really fun to see 'em playing a live show. Their tunes completes a broad horizon of genres and make them unique. I have many words to describe this release but I'm too much into this sound and too much a friend of the band to review it in an objective way. The only thing i really wan't to do here is to introduce the members of the band.

Ladies first:
Joul
(vox): She is a very talented female singer with a stand-alone voice, fit-in lyrics and characteristic melodies.

Hans aka. HP (Bass): HP lives for the music and his basslines are carrying the tracks like on waves to the end where they seem to impact. Hans is also one of the best bassists i know personally. His side-project Home demonstrates that he's not only a mammoth bass-player but also a good singer.

Steini (drums): Steini is a drummer of Stoner Rock up to 110%. Always smiling while playing, always smiling while not playing. He's also the organizer of the great "Floiten Jam"-Festival. Respect!

Andi (guitar): Last but not Least. Andi is known for his catchy, flowing guitar-riffs, wearing a woolly hat and jamming in state of trance all day long.

Space Trip On A Paper Plane is recorded, mixed and mastered by Magasit. aka Magi. Magi also acts as drummer with HP in Home and did a remix of our latest Our Ceasing Voice single "Passenger Killed In Hit And Run" and is helping us in some mastering process.

The physical copy of this release will be availaible within the next few days. and is limited to 500 pieces. Support them and grab a copy of it using the information at "Buy & Support"!

Chakrun & Seas Of Stone SPLIT (2010)

Seas Of Stone:

Dirty Sun Jazz - Dirty Sun Jazz EP (2009)

___________________________________________________________

I saw Dirty Sun Jazz several times live, and every time was an experience for me. Dirty Sun Jazz is a „Liveband“ over and over. There are no constraints on stage. They rock like hell and the crowd is animated to rock with `em. Finally after endless live-gigs they recorded a few of their compositions to release it physically and digitally for you. The output is more than only satisfying. It includes 5 tracks and scores with true desert-rock. Check it out!

Dirty Sun Jazz? Dirty Sánchez?

Quote from Wikipedia: "Dirty Sánchez is the act of smearing faeces on the upper lip of a partner during (or following) various types of anal sex Some experts claim an equivalent term Stinky Hitler or Frosty Mustache."

Sundust - Sundust (EP) (2007)

Stoner Rock?

___________________________________________________________

What is Stoner Rock? For me it is the perfect mix between catchy, downtuned guitarriffs paired with fast, sometimes slow, pushing, diversified drum-rhythms and a voice that moderates force! Force in terms of indestructibleness!

Sundust from vienna definitely owns these characteristics. That these guys just live for this genre demonstrates their `07 released record „Sundust“. It is full of energy and the listener just has to move his neck-muscles on and on. It’s the perfect release for a trip onto the Route-66!

In some parts Sundust reminds me very much on Dirty Sun Jazz which also comes from austria and will be reviewed on this blog soon. Listen to this. It's worth it!

Learn To Swim-Event-Review: Omega Massif, Doomina, Malatesta (Munich, 6.11.2009)

Freitag Abend, 20:00 Uhr: / Friday night 8 p.m.:

___________________________________________________________

The “Oberpfalz-Squad” (me, Elton, Michi…unfortunately without the guys from Fire Walk With Me!, who had to practice for their great gig on the Sunday Smile Festival) arrives at the Feierwerk site and get directly asked (appearance Tobias Engler): “Are you the guys in Doomina?” Then we were four already. After a little conversation we were advised that we could enter the venue.

Then we primary looked after our physical well-being (beer, coke) and we were told that Doomina got into a traffic jam as well as in a police check.
Shortly before the beginning of the first performance (Malatesta) the guys from Kärnten and the rest of the PRC members from Innsbruck showed up and the show could begin.
___________________________________________________________

Freitag Abend, 21:15 Uhr: / Friday night 9.15 p.m.: MALATESTA

___________________________________________________________

Malatesta enter the stage and immediately kick off…the four Munich guys play Crust at its best. Like it should be: fast, hard and dirty. The performance, which was way too short in my opinion (20 minutes), was bursting with energy and the four musicians where into it wholeheartedly. Only the Munich audience seemed not to be too impressed, but ok… that’s Munich. Maybe Malatesta wasn’t the perfect pick as an opener, but I enjoyed it anyway.

After a short break Doomina started their show without sound check.
___________________________________________________________

Freitag Abend, ca. 22.00 Uhr: / Friday night, about 10 p.m.: DOOMINA

Listen to "Doomina - A Grave For The Masses":

___________________________________________________________

Considerate readers of our blog might know the four guys from Carinthia (Austria), therefore I don’t want to loose much words on their sound. Maybe one thing: They don’t know genre limits and created their own sound. A bit of post rock here, a bit of doom there, in addition a small amount of heavy metal guitar solos and what stands out for me, a bunch of professionalism. Except “March On, Dead Man/Hypersonoruos“ (with sound effects of a toy gun), I didn’t recognize any song because they probably played mostly new ones. I have to compliment you for what you showed off, I haven’t expected. Your songs are live much better than on CD and when you get the chance to record one of your performances, I please you: Do it!

Sadly Doomina’s show ended after 45 minutes and the last break got a bit long… which was a good moment to get in touch with the buddies from Carinthia.

Freitag Nacht, 23:15 Uhr: / Friday night, 11.15 p.m.: OMEGA MASSIF

Listen "Omega Massif - Unter Null":

___________________________________________________________

Coated in blue light Omega Massif started their set with the first song of the “Geisterstadt” LP “In der Mine”. From there on I was like in a state of trance. Because Hannes was standing in front of me I couldn’t see much of the performance but that didn’t really matter for me.
For me it was like: Close your eyes and enjoy every moment.
Omega Massif really cope with the term “Post Metal Monster” on the flyer. Doomy guitar riffs and wavering bass (which was a bit too loud in my opinion).
Also to Omega Massif I have to say their much better live than on CD. Which is for me one of the must-haves of a really good band.
___________________________________________________________

Samstag Morgen, 0:10 Uhr: / Saturday morning, 0.10 a.m.: OMEGA MASSIF (Encore)

___________________________________________________________

As an encore Omega Massif played their downright monster-song “Unter Null”, which actually animated the lethargic Munich audience to strain their neck muscles and bid farewell the guys from Würzburg.

After the concert Michi and I fetched ourselves a copy of the “Geisterstadt” LP (that was definitely overdue) and after a short goodbye we went back into the Bavarian Forest.

At last many thanks to Alex who organized the whole thing. I hope that we’re all meeting again in the near future and thanks to everyone who was there to support some underground bands. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Doomina - Adventures Of Dope (EP) (2006)

Was nichts Schlechtes heißen soll. "Let The Churches Burn" kam ja auch '06 raus.

PS.: Der 2te Track "... And The We Will Rise" klingt wie der ältere Bruder von Kylesa's "Running Red"!!!!!!
___________________________________________________________

Yeah man, this is Stonerdoom. With their 2008 release March On, Dead Man Doomina have already talked myself into believing that Carinthia might have a desert-metropolis soon. Now I know for sure that Doomina have sand for breakfast and wash it down with whiskey.

This is the first Demo (recorded 4 weeks after formation!) of a very young band, released in 2006 and it even sounds a little more refined in my opinion - certainly not a bad thing. The songs have a more doomy character and hit my taste straigth into the genitals, whereas March On, Dead Man aimed a little off target. The songs are really dirty, and even Suma-like vocals find their way onto the 3rd track. ("A Grave For The Masses") As it is generally known "Let The Churches Burn" was released in 2006 as well - who copied whom is a question without answer. Maybe it was a coincidence. However, it sounds great and devastating for both bands! For me Doomina is a true insider's tip - trademark: "Made in Austria"! The Cover for this Re-Release is made by Reinhold Rittinger, who also made the photographs for Our Ceasing Voice.

PS.: The second track "... And The We Will Rise" sounds like the older brother of Kylesa's "Running Red"!!!!
