Coma Cluster - Coma Cluster (2009)

Against the world

According to latest estimations, about 260 million people are registered on myspace. One of those is Chris from the United States, who plays post-rock and spreads it across the world via the social network. Looking at one of the elaborate, flash-based profiles that many bands claim as their full pride, substituting their own websites, however, Chris' profile seems coddy and uninspired. If it's not only a feast for the eyes, but one the ears as well, it's not the conditions one might ask for to stand out from the over-saturated music market.

But should music be the only thing that matters, dropping the things mentioned above, as well as a vapid cover, Coma Cluster has the same chances as everyone else. Advantageously for the one-man-project, this self-titled CD is a wonderful post rock album. Altough, like lots of young band's records, it might not come up with innovation but it offers catchy songs, refining known ideas a little, rather than replacing them with new ones.

If not being able to tell similar bands and/ or archetypes is necessary in order to be considered as self-contained and creative, everyone has to decide himself. Does a band want to eke out a living on their own, or would they walk a way, that others might have paved a little, shoulder to shoulder with their comrade-in-arms? Coma Cluster decided for the later on his debut-work, but through flowing arrangements, always focusing on melodic guitar parts, he is making sure, that the listener's attention will not be lost. Granted, in Bay of Rainbows, a nearly 9 minute long song, this had to happen - the guitars seem shallow and fatiguing, the wait for support of other instruments in vain. Minutes later, however, they're brimming with power, effects and momentum. The drums and bone-crushing powerchords remind of Chuter, Orion Dawn is now given a more electronic feel, every doubt is washed away. As soon as Chris manages to put this feeling over persistently, Coma Cluster will displace even more of it's opponents, than the strong project did already with this work - despite an empty myspace face.
