Telemetrics - live.121908 (2008)

Disaster before Christmas

Disaster before Christmas

The spirit of Christmas lies in the air - and Ohio gets to feel this in a very special way, the Disaster before Christmas. The netlabel Modicum of Silence invited to see Telemetrics along with other artists on the label live on stage.

After 2 very thrilling releases, Telemetrics now offer their pre-christmas performance for download. The ones who know Callsign 65.41 and 104.6 WTEL, and having to ask, how Kevin McCraney and Nic Ross transfer their sound with live-drummer Caleb Miller on stage and wondering how this might sound:

A half hour scream of despondency. Half an hour of trepidation. A half hour requiem to hopes abandoned. Half an hour of loneliness. Half an hour under Telemetric's spell.

And for all those, who need something for the eye: Modicum of Silence also provides videos of a Telemetrics performance and other artists shows on Youtube.

Telemetrics - 104.6 WTEL (2008)

„You are listenig to 104.6 WTEL, Ohio.“

Kevin McCraney and Nic Ross didn’t really give me the time to digest their latest release, Callsign 65.41 and yet they already throw the next album into the center of my thinking.

104.6 WTEL is a fictional radio broadcast, based in the hometown of the two Ohio musicians. The station’s music is hardly describable; some might define the programme as Post Rock, while others would relate it to Noise or Experimental. One point, however, will be agreed on by every listener: 104.6 WTEL spreads pure desperation via its radio waves.

Once you landed on the right frequency, adjusted the right volume and the “on air lamp” flashes with red light, there is no turning back. The guitar feedbacks virtually scream for help while the manipulated samples give me the feeling of hopelessness and the drumming seems to become more intense and threatening with every hit on the tom. “You are listening to 104.6 WTEL, Ohio.”

Both tracks are, like on the last album, split into different movements, the changes seem to be accomplished even more skillfully though. Every now and then you are awakened to the fact that you are already in a new movement but you are never really sure, how this has just happened. You feel captivated by the music, hardly believing how fast fascination lets half an hour pass by – In terms of creativity this album is hardly to be beaten.

Telemetrics - Callsign 65.41 (2008)

Callsign 65.41 is one track clocking in at about 25 minutes, but which might count as a whole album. Split into 6 movements, taking influences from Boris, Tony Conrad, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Sonic Youth, Callsign 65.41 leaves a similar queasy feeling of angst and loneliness in our stomaches like Lift yr. Skinny fists like antennas to heaven had done before.

The two guys from Ohio manage to create a creative, noisy Post-Rock album, but they never lose sight of their goal – audibility. Noise-parts seem melodic and are swamped with samples, only aiming to make me scroll through the wonderful booklet again and spend the next half hour numbed and in some kind of trance.
