Time Has Come - Neurodiversity (2010)

Death-, Grind-, Math-, Hardcore band from Germany. Similar to "War From A Harlots Mouth" . This release is mixed with Ambient interludes.

Home - Promo EP (2010)

Home hatten schon einige Namen und Formationen und ist "als Projekt" schon einige Jahre aktiv. Die fixe, endgültige Formation ist erst im Oktober 2009 festgestanden. Nach einem ersten fulminanten Auftritt Ende 2009 im PMK in Innsbruck beschlossen sie ihren Namen ein letztes Mal zu ändern und eine Promo EP aufzunehmen.

Die Formation besteht aus bekannten Namen aus der Innsbrucker Underground-Szene Hans-Peter Ganner (Vocals, Bass; / Bassist-Sahara Surfers, ExBassist-DNR, ExBassist-Crippled), Amadeus Mader (Guitar; / ExGitarrist-Botanical Garden, ExGitarrist-Room 101) und der Multi-Instrumentalist Mathias Magerle (Drums; / ExVocalist-DNR, ExGitarrist-Crippled, ExMultiInstrumentalist-Jokers In Trousers).

Mit den 3 Songs auf dieser EP, die in Rekordzeit eingespielt waren, beweisen sie wahre Stärke und überraschen (mich jedenfalls) mit einer kompletten Stilrichtungsänderung. Hans-Peter ist erstmals am Mikrofon vertreten mit einer brachialen Stimme, die ich ihm wohl so nicht zugetraut hätte. Generell ist der Sound von Home sehr schwer einzuordnen. Mich erinnert es sehr an Kylesa, wobei man bei Kylesa auch nicht zu 100% sagen kann aus welcher Ecke sie stammen.

Ein Mix aus Sludge, Psychedelic und Hardcore erwartet euch hier. Jeder der Power in der Musik sucht, ist hier genau richtig. Viel Spaß!

Home had many names and formations since the beginning of this project. The final formation exists ever since octobre 2009. After a first trailbrazing gig at the end of 2009 in the PMK in Innsbruck the 3-piece decided to change the name a last time and record a Promo EP.

The band exists of very popular names of the underground-scene in Innsbruck. Hans-Peter Ganner (Vocals, Bass; / Bassist-Sahara Surfers, ExBassist-DNR, ExBassist-Crippled), Amadeus Mader (Guitar; / ExGuitarist-Botanical Garden, ExGuitarist-Room 101) and Multi-Instrumentalist Mathias Magerle (Drums; / ExVocalist-DNR, ExGuitarist-Crippled, ExMultiInstrumentalist-Jokers In Trousers).

With the 3 songs of this EP, that was recorded in no time, Home demonstrates pure strength and surprises (at all events ME) with a totally new soundscape. This is Hans-Peters first try in a band as vocalist with a totally brachial voice. The tunes are generally very hard to classify with a genre. It reminds me very much on the sounds of Kylesa. But it is also very hard to range the music of Kylesa.

A mix of Sludge, Psychedelic and Hardcore is awaiting you with this release. This is for everybody who is searching for music full of power! Have fun!

Protesys - Censura (2008)

Das Intro der LP Censura gibt die Marschrichtung eindeutig vor: eine technisch versierte Mischung aus Metal und Hardcore, also tighte Metalriffs mit viel Hardcore-Groove haben die 4 Kubaner auf ihrer Debüt-CD verewigt. Das ist an sich nichts neues, aber man muss ja das Rad nicht immer neu erfinden... solange das Endprodukt qualitativ hochwertig ist, will und kann ich mich darüber nicht beschweren.

Hin und wieder schleichen sich bei den Kubanern auch progressive Songstrukturen ein, was immer wieder für ein Lächeln bei mir gesorgt hat. Die Jungs schaffen es, viele Tempowechsel in die jeweiligen Songs so zu integrieren, dass sie weder störend noch aufdringlich wirken (Pervertido wäre ein Paradebeispiel hierfür).

Da ich keinerlei Spanisch spreche geschweige denn verstehe, kann ich nichts über die Lyrics sagen, aber ich vermute mal, dass es sich bei Protesys um eine politische Band handelt... Albumtitel und Cover waren meine ersten Hinweise ;) Wenn mir jemand die Texte übersetzen könnte, ich wäre ihm sehr dankbar.

Abschließend kann ich jedem, der etwas für eine Hardcore-Metal-Mischung mit leicht progressiven Versatzstücken übrig hat, die LP Censura nur empfehlen. Jedem, der nicht sicher ist, ob ihm dieses Genre zusagt, kann ich nur raten, sich dieses Album trotzdem zu besorgen und einfach mal reinzuhören... und wenns euch dann nicht gefällt, so bin ich mir trotzdem sicher, dass ihr schon so manche halbe Stunde in eurem Leben schlechter unterhalten wart.

The opening track Intro immediately shows us, what this LP is all about: a technically versed mixture of Metal and Hardcore, a combination of tight, but rough riffing and groovy drums, coming to you straight from Cuba. And if you say, that you know about a thousand bands that do the same, all I can say is: Who cares! As long as everything is well done and nicely crafted, I just don't care if this has been done before.

Every now and then, progressive structures sneak up on you and when they start shinig through all that rough exterior, it makes you smile a little. Those four guys manage to stuff some of their songs with breaks and changes of pace without destroying the flow in the songs (Pervertido would be a perfect example for this).

Since I don't know any Spanish I can't say anything about the lyrics, but I do think that Protesys is a political band... by the way, my first clues were the album cover and the album title ;) If anybody would be so kind as to translate the lyrics for me, I would like that very much.

Finally, all I can say is, that everybody who likes Metal and Hardcore and still likes them, when they are mixed together in a big jug with a little bit of progressive structures, should get this album. And if you are not completely sure that you like this genre... aww well, get the damn thing anyway. And if you don't like it in the end, you still can't deny that there were some 30 minutes in your life before where you have been entertained worse.

Our Subatomic Earth - Nothing EP (2009)

"Following a tragic, last-minute hard drive collapse, the source files for the majority of this EP were lost forever. Fortunately, several of my close friends had demos of my songs still sitting on their computers, allowing me to piece it back together into this distorted state. Gott sei Dank hatte da noch jemand diese Demos auf dem Rechner, denn sonst wäre dieser Post-Rock/Post-Hardcore/Sludge-Bastard eventuell vom Antlitz dieser Erde verschwunden, und das wäre meiner Meinung nach sehr schade.

Zuweilen melodiös verspielt und zuweilen wuchtig auf den Punkt zielend sind diese vier Songs, brutal und wunderschön zugleich. Nic Ross, Mastermind und einziges Mitglied der Band, hat mit dieser EP voll ins Schwarze getroffen. Immer, wenn die Post-Rock-Parts drohen, langweilig zu werden, tritt er entweder aufs Gaspedal oder er reißt das akustische Lenkrad um 180° herum... und genau das ist etwas, was mir sehr gut gefällt und im Post-Rock viel zu wenig passiert.

Also, liebe Leserinnen und Leser, mein Fazit lautet: Runterladen, anhören und dann am besten gleich die Infinite EP bei Modicum Of Silence für 5$ kaufen!

Thank god some of his friends still had those demos on their hard-drives, because it they didn't,

I would have never heard that bastard child of post rock, sludge and hardcore... and if you ask me, that would be a shame.

With their both melodic and sometimes very straight forward parts, these four songs are equally as beautiful as they are brutal. Nic Ross, mastermind and only member of this band really hit the spot with this EP. Everytime the post rockesque parts are in danger of becoming really boring he just goes to overdrive or does a 180° turn and heads for a completely different direction... and that is something I really like and tend to miss in a lot releases from the post rock sector.

At last,the only recommendation I can give to you, dearest reader, is the following: download it, listen to it and then, you can buy his new output called Infinite for a lousy 5 bucks at the Modicum Of Silence webstore. Enjoy!

Widower - Widower EP (2009)

“If you don´t expect that much from us, you might not be let down” schreiben Widower aus Milwaukee auf ihrer Myspace-Seite. Dieses sympathische Understatement hat die Band nach dem Release ihrer ersten EP eigentlich gar nicht nötig. In ihren fünf Songs (hinzu kommt ein aus Sprach- und Radio-Samples bestehendes Outro), verpackt in knappe 20 Minuten Spielzeit, bietet der Fünfer kraftvollen Hardcore im Stile von etwa Modern Life Is War. Die Songs sind meist im Midtempo-Bereich angesiedelt, brechen aber immer wieder aus. Kraftvolle Moshparts wechseln sich mit rasenden Highspeed-Attacken ab, wobei diese aber eindeutig in der Unterzahl bleiben. Es überwiegen die schleppenden Passagen, was dem Sound der Band auch gut tut. Garniert werden die Songs mit den verzweifelt-anklagenden Vocals von Shouter Casey. Dass dieser dabei völlig auf melodischen Gesang verzichtet, empfinde ich als sehr angenehm. Die emotionalen Lyrics, die auf ihrer Myspace-Präsenz nachzulesen sind, drehen sich meist um private Themen, wie etwa das Älter werden, das Alleine sein oder um zwischenmenschliche Aufrichtigkeit.

Natürlich erfinden Widower das Hardcore-Rad nicht neu. Wer aber wie ich auf diesen Sound steht, kann hier blind zuschlagen. Auf weitere Kategorisierungen möchte ich auch verzichten, Begriffe wie Modern Hardcore oder Post Hardcore nehme ich bewusst nicht in den Mund. Für mich ist es einfach “nur” Hardcore. Ich warte auf jeden Fall gespannt auf weitere Releases der Band und höre währenddessen sicherlich noch einige Male ihre EP.

"If you don't expect that much from us, you might not be let down" - a likeable understatement that Widower from Milwaukee don't really need to have on their myspace page after the release of their first EP. Spread over a running time of nearly 20 minutes and 5 songs (with an additional spoken word and radio sample outro), the band offers powerful Hardcore in the vein of Modern Life Is War. Mostly, the songs reside in the midtempo area, but they will burst out again and again. Powerful Moshparts take turns with rare, raging high-speed attacks. Sagging passages prevail, which does the band's sound only good. Shouter Casey garnishes the songs with desperate and accussing vocals. The fact that he does without melodic singing, is perceived as very pleasing. The emotional lyrics, which can be found at their myspace profile, are about intimate topics, like aging, being alone or interpersonal honesty.

Needless to say, Widower won't reinvent the hardcore wheel. But those who are into this sound - like myself - can grab it blindly. Also, I don't want to classify genres any further, terms like Modern Hardcore or Post Hardcore won't cross my lips knowingly. It is "only" Hardcore for me. However, I'm awaiting further releases of the band eagerly, while I will surely listen to their EP for a few times in the meantime.

Celeste - Misanthrope(s) (2009)

Frankreich hat viel zu bieten und sicherlich ein absolutes Highlight dieses Landes sind Celeste. Nach Pessimiste(s) und Nihiliste(s) kommt nun der 3. Teil der Serie – Misanthrope(s) – um uns zu überrennen. Gerade nach Nihiliste(s) waren die Erwartungen sehr groß und die Vorfreude auf geballte Energie noch größer. Was kann man nun zu Misanthrope(s) sagen? Celeste ist sicherlich wieder ein sehr gutes Album gelungen. Klanglich tritt es in vollkommene Symbiose zum Vorgänger Nihiliste(s) und genau das ist gleichzeitig größtes Lob wie auch größter Kritikpunkt am Album. Nach dem fast schon Überalbum Nihiliste(s) schaffen Celeste es diesen Level zu halten, nicht jedoch zu toppen.

Na gut das konnte man nicht erwarten, da das Niveau des Vorgängers auch extrem hoch war und es schon ein wahnsinniger Erfolg ist dieses zu halten. Zumal das auch so vielen – auch extrem guten Bands – nicht gelingt. Also kein Grund um am Album anzuecken? Prinzipiell ja. Celeste schaffen es wieder einen mit solch einer Wucht zu überrollen, dass man sich gerne mal verwirrt umblickt, suchend nach der Herde tollwütiger Büffel die einen da gerade platt getrampelt hat. Die Stimmung bleibt durchgehen düster und bedrohlich. Nicht umsonst wurde das Album um 6.66pm zum Download frei gegeben ;). Die Shouts sind richtig beißend, die Riffs walzen nur so dahin, das Schlagzeug prescht nur so drauf los und dabei verliert das Ganze nie an Ästhetik.

Also ein Meisterwerk?
Ja und Nein.

Celeste schaffen es leider nicht sich vom grandiosen Vorgänger zu lösen. So wirkt Misanthrope(s) häufig wie der 2., bisher fehlende Teil von Nihiliste(s). An sich nicht verkehrt zumal die Alben ja zusammen hängen sollen, jedoch hören sich die Alben so verdammt ähnlich an, dass Misanthrope(s) einfach eine eigene Identität fehlt. Hört man sich die 2 Alben nacheinander an, kann es durchaus passieren, dass man verdutzt auf die Player Anzeige schaut um sich zu vergewissern, dass man nicht doch versehentlich 2mal Nihiliste(s) in die Playlist geschoben hat. Hier hätte man vielleicht für etwas mehr Variation sorgen können.

Fazit: Tolles, energiegeladenes Album, dem leider etwas die Abgrenzung zum Vorgänger fehlt. Nichts desto trotz ein Album auf extrem hohem Niveau das richtig Spaß macht und zu überzeugen weiß.

France has a lot to offer and surely one of the highlights of this country are Celeste. After Pessimiste(s) and Nihiliste(s) now the 3rd part of the series – Misanthrope(s) – is released to overrun everybody not quick enough to jump aside. Especially after Nihiliste(s) the expectations couldn`t be higher and the anticipation of pure energy was even bigger. What to say about Misanthrope(s)? Well Celeste surely managed to record an extremely good album again. Concerning the sound it goes hand in hand with it`s parent Nihiliste(s) and this is it`s strength and weak spot at the same time. After the incredible strong and almost unreachable Nihiliste(s), Celeste manage to stay on this level but not to top it.

Okay this couldn`t be expected especially as the level of the partent was extremely high and reaching this level again can be seen as success. Above all a lot of bands – releasing great records – can never reach this level again. So no reason for being disappointed? In the first run yes. Celeste are overrunning you with such power that you turn around – looking for the rabid flock of buffaloes that trampled you to the ground. The atmosphere is always dark and threatening. not on accident the album was released at 6.66pm ;). The shouts are itching, the riffs are rolling towards you, the drums dashing unstoppable and at the same time the whole sound doesn`t loose aesthetics.

So a masterpiece?
Yes and no.

Sadly Celeste can`t cut off from the parent album. Sometimes Misanthrope(s) seems like the – forgotten – second part of Nihiliste(s). First you might think nothing especially because the albums build a circle but the two albums sound that damn equal that i`m missing the own identity of Misanthrope(s). If you listen to both albums in a row, it can happen that you look – quite confused – onto your playlist to be sure that you didn`t add Nihiliste(s) two times. This is the point where some more variation would be appreciated.

So at the end: A great, powerfull recording, which is missing a little borderline to it`s parent. But still a album on an extremely high level which is fun to listen to.

Facing The Swarm Thought - Lost.Found.Banished. EP (2009)

Der fünfer Facing The Swarm Thought aus Augsburg bietet auf der Lost.Found.Banished. EP Blastbeats (wenn auch nicht in Hyper-Lichtgeschwindigkeit wie bei diversen Brutal Death Metal Acts), brutale Moshdowns, tightes und präzises Riffing und vor allem eine mir persönlich sehr angenehme Härte. Ein bisschen erinnert mich ihr Sound an den von Converge, wobei sich FTST nicht an solch chaotischen Arrangements versuchen, wie es Converge normalerweise tun.

Die drei Songs (Praying Mantis, The Red Sea und Bullet Of Thoughts) quellen nur so über vor Ideenreichtum. Diese Ideen werden hier nachvollziehbar präsentiert und zwar in Songs mit relativ viel Struktur und ganz viel Groove. Früher, bevor der Begiff Metalcore zur Beleidigung für Bands wurde, hätte man diese EP wahrscheinlich auch noch als Metalcore bezeichnet... hatte man damals ja auch bei Converge so gemacht. Heutzutage würde man es eher als Mathcore bezeichnen, vielleicht sogar als Deathcore.

Aber ich bleibe dabei und bezeichne diese Musik jetzt einfach als Metalcore, und zwar in dem Sinne, wie es auch für Alben wie Jane Doe oder Aeolian gebraucht wurde. Die Grundstimmung auf Lost.Found.Banished. ist in etwa die selbe als auf Jane Doe und Aeolian... es gibt keine Lichtblicke, nur unterschiedliche Graustufen und Schwarzschattierungen... vor allem gibt es keine Hoffnung.

Für alle Freunde der härteren Gangart ist diese EP auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen, jedem, dem schon die Fluxion von The Ocean zu hart ist kann ich hiervon nur abraten... Mir gefällts hervorragend, vor allem das großartige Bullet Of Thoughts, welches ihr hier auch probehören könnt.

Facing the Swarm Thought, consisting of five guys from Augsburg, deliver blastbeats (however not in hyperspeed as one may know from brutal death metal acts), brutal moshdowns, tight and precise riffing and especially a certain kind of heaviness I really like a lot. Their sound reminds me a little bit of Converge, but a lot less chaotic with straight forward arrangements.

The three songs (Praying Mantis, The Red Sea and Bullet Of Thoughts respectively) are filled with ideas that are presented in a way where everybody can understand them, i.e. in structured songs with lots of groove. About ten years back, before the term metalcore became an insult for bands, this EP would have been labeled metalcore... just like they did with Converge back then. Nowadays one would lable it mathcore or even deathcore.

But I still call this style metalcore in the sense that it was used ten years ago... just like they did it with Jane Doe or Aeolian. And there is a certain resemblence between Lost.Found.Banished. and these particular LPs... no light, only shades of black and gray... and definitely no hope.

Everybody who likes his music heavy as fuck should give this EP a spin, everybody who thinks that The Ocean's Fluxion is too heavy, stay away... I like it a lot, especially the grand Bullet Of Thoughts, which you can listen to here.

Our Subatomic Earth – IS (EP) (2009)

Our Subatomic Earth ist ein neues Home-Recording-Projekt von Nic Ross, bekannt durch sein Elektronik-Solo-Projekt gotikplage und die Band Telemetrics. Zeigte er sich bei den eben genannten eher von seiner elektronischen bzw. progressiveren Seite, bewegt er sich mit Our Subatomic Earth mehr in der Post-Rock-Ecke mit starken Ambient-Anteilen und Hardcore-Vocals, an die man sich allerdings erstmal gewöhnen muss. Herausgekommen ist dabei eine knapp 20 minütige 4-Track EP namens „IS“. Das erste Lied „(beauty)“ dient als Einführung und ist sehr ambientartig mit Spoken Words versehen. Bei „Constellation Man“ glaubt man zunächst, es befindet sich plötzlich ein anderes Album im Player, da der Kontrast zum ersten Song enorm ist. Denn ohne Umschweife geht es hier direkt zur Sache: Knarzende Gitarren, polternde Drums und wilde Vocals treiben ihr Unwesen, allerdings dauert dies nicht mal 2 Minuten an, bis ein längerer, ruhiger Part beginnt und Zeit zum entspannen gibt, bevor es wieder rund geht. Das kann sich wirklich hören lassen! Der Titeltrack „Is“ beginnt sehr ruhig verwandelt sich aber in seinem Verlauf zu einem wüsten Durcheinander, nur um dann wieder abzuebben. Die Dynamiken sind hier klar verteilt und viele, kleine Sounds wurden gut versteckt. Das gefällt mir wirklich sehr gut. Track 4 „(sublime)“ dient dann als Outro einer wirklich sehr gelungenen EP, die wirklich sehr viel Spaß macht. Ich hoffe, es gibt bald mehr!

Our Subatomic Earth is a new home-recording-project of Nic Ross, formerly known by his electronics solo project gotikplage and the band Telemetrics, in which he showed himself on the one hand from his electronic side and his more progressive side on the other hand. Our Subatomic Earth is more resident in the Post-Rock genre with strong portions of Ambient with Hardcore-Vocals, to which you have to attune yourself to in the first place. The outcome is a 20 minute long 4-track EP called „IS“. The first song „(beauty)“ is an introduction with ambient elements and spoken words. When „Constellation One“ is crushing in you believe, that there’s suddenly another album in the player, since the contrast is enormous to the first song, because it goes directly to the thing: Noisy guitars, rumbling drums and wild vocals are walking abroad. However, this persists just for 2 minutes, until a longer, calm part begins, which gives time to rest a bit, before it goes again. Sounds really great! The title track „Is“ begins very calmly and transforms in its process to a wild disorder, to only die down in order again. The dynamics are distributed very well and many, small sounds are well hidden in this song. I really like it very much. Track 4 „(sublime)“ serves as an outro of a very nice EP, which makes much fun to listen to. I hope there will be more soon!

Chicagoer Hardcore meets Jazz meets Progressive. Wer sich auf buddhistische Art und Weise den Arsch ins Nirvana treten lassen will ist hier genau richtig. Purer progressiver Hardcore mit teilweisen Einsatz von Saxophon. FaveTrack "Dishonor" und "20 Bucks"!

SAMSARA (Sanskrit, m., संसार, saṃsāra, wörtl.: „beständiges Wandern“) ist die Bezeichnung für den immer währenden Zyklus des Seins, den Kreislauf von Werden und Vergehen, im Kreislauf der Wiedergeburten.

Dieser ewige Kreislauf wird in den östlichen Religionen (Hinduismus, Buddhismus und Jainismus) als leidvoll (vgl. Dukkha/Leiden) gewertet. Der Ausbruch aus diesem unheilvollen Kreislauf geschieht auf dem Wege des Loslassens von allen Bindungen, Begierden und Wunschvorstellungen sowie durch Erkenntnis. Erreicht wird der Zustand der „Erlöstheit“ (und nach einigen Varianten der ewigen Glückseligkeit, vgl. Erlösung), den die Hindus Moksha und die Buddhisten Nirvana nennen.

Sehr anschaulich wird Samsara im so genannten Lebensrad dargestellt, das im tibetischen Buddhismus weit verbreitet ist. Dabei sind im Zentrum, um die Nabe, sozusagen die Triebkräfte des Rades dargestellt, die Drei Geistesgifte: Gier, Hass und Verblendung, als Hahn, Schlange und Schwein. Der Hahn symbolisiert die Gier, die Schlange den Hass und das Schwein die Unwissenheit. Daran anschließend ist das Resultat von Handlungen basierend auf den Geistesgiften als absteigender Weg schwarz, der Weg der Überwindung dieser Geistesgifte wird als aufsteigender Pfad weiß dargestellt. Diese Wege führen auf der nächsten Ebene in die sechs möglichen Wiedergeburtsbereiche dargestellt: Weiß v. o. n. u.: Götter (Devas oder Suras), (Asuras), Menschen. Schwarz v. o. n. u.: Tiere, hungrige Geister (Pretas), Höllenwesen. Dabei nimmt das Ausmaß des Leidens vom Götterbereich abwärts kontinuierlich zu, bis zu den extremen Leidenserfahrungen und den verschiedenen Höllenbereichen (kalte, heiße, große Höllen). Allerdings eignet sich eine menschliche Daseinsform am besten, um Nirvana zu erreichen, da man als Mensch weder übermäßig Leid noch übermäßig Glück erfährt. Bei einer Daseinsform als Gott ist das Glücksempfinden so stark, dass man keinen Grund sehen wird, aus dieser Existenz in Samsara auszubrechen. Bei einer Daseinsform als Tier hat man nicht den nötigen Verstand, um aus Samsara auszubrechen und bei einer Daseinsform als hungriger Geist oder Höllenwesen hat man aufgrund des überwiegenden Leidens nur schwer die Möglichkeit dazu. Im Außenbereich werden die 12 Glieder des abhängigen Entstehens bildlich dargestellt, wo Nichtwissen (Sanskrit „avidya“, Pali „avijja“) am Anfang/Ende des gesamten Kreislaufs steht.
