Codes in the Clouds - Paper Canyon (2009)

Codes in The Clouds gelten als eine der besten Entdeckungen im Jahr 2009. Die fünf Mann starke Band aus London/Kent hat mit Paper Canyon nämlich einen Longplayer geschaffen, der sich sehen und vor allem hören lassen kann.

Geboten wird hier feinster Instrumentaler Post-Rock, den zwar manche Genre-Kollegen in dieser oder der anderen Form bereits vormachten, doch Melodien, Arrangements und Leidenschaft auf Paper Canyons bleiben dennoch einzigartig in einer neuen Klasse stehen. Mit einer Gesamtlänge von knapp 40 Minuten - verteilt auf sechs Songs - ist das Vergnügen jedoch viel zu schnell vorbei, wenn in Liedern wie Distant Street Lights der Erdboden zu vibrieren beginnt, oder wenn im herrausragendsten Stück der Platte, We Anchor in Hope, sich die Hoffnung zu einem unvergesslichen Monument der Ekstase errichtet. Diese unsagbar schöne Atmosphäre wird durch exzellentes Gitarrenspiel, dem soliden Bass und dynamischen Drumming geschaffen, sodass der Hörer Sorgen und Ängste loslassen kann, um mit den Engländern vollends in die nächsten beiden Stücke einzutauchen. Da aber Hochmut bekanntlich vor dem Fall kommt, werden Codes in the Clouds im ersten Teil ihres letzten Songs ruhiger, gelassener und wesentlich geduldiger, um dann genauso euphorisch und mit Dopamin geladen, wie zuvor, ihren Paper Canyon zu überspringen und im Herzen der Hörer zu landen.

Codes in the Clouds count as one of the best discoveries in 2009. With Paper Canyon, the five-piece band from London/ Kent recorded a longplayer that is a pleasure for the ears.

The record features instrumental Post-Rock at it's finest, which might have been heard from a few genre-comrades, but melodies, arrangements and passion make Paper Canyon a unique experience on a whole new level. With a total-length of closely 40 minutes - spread over six tracks - the pleasure, however, is gone way too fast, when songs like Distant Street Lights let the ground vibrate, or when in the standout-track of the album, We Anchor in Hope, hope erects itself to an unforgettable monument of frenzy. The unutterable beautiful atmosphere is created through excellent guitar playing, a solid bass and very dynamic drumming, so that the listener can let go of sorrows and fears, just to dive into the next two songs completely. But given that prides goes before a fall, Codes in the Clouds become more relaxed, more quiet and considerably more patient, in order to jump their paper canyon as euphorically and laden with dopamine as before and land straight in the listener's hearts.
