Quote: Somber Light ist ein Instrumental-Trio aus Verona (Italien) . Die Band wurde im November 2008 vom Gitarristen Carlo Polo gegründet, die endgültige Zusammensetzung der Band war in Januar 2009 mit dem Eintritt von dem Schlagzeugspieler Domenico Carnevale gefunden worden. Habt ihr euch beim Hören von Meshuggah nicht auch schon das eine oder andere Mal gedacht: "Was wäre, wenn sich die Jungs mal ein bisschen Mühe geben würden, was ihre Melodien angeht?" Versteht mich nicht falsch, ich liebe Meshuggah, aber hin und wieder wünscht man sich doch auch mal ein paar Verschnaufpausen, und die sind bei den Schweden doch eher selten. Für alle, denen es auch so geht, gibts von mir jetzt die ultimative Empfehlung.

Ben Sharp war anscheinend der gleichen Meinung wie ich und hat daraufhin sein Ein-Mann-Projekt Cloudkicker ins Leben gerufen. Die EP The Map Is Not The Territory und das Album The Discovery hören sich teilweise an, als wären sie von Meshuggah geschrieben und eingespielt. Nur dass Ben Sharp das ganz alleine gemacht hat und das gesamte Emotionsspektrum ausfüllt... von hasserfüllt bis lebensbejahend ist eigentlich alles dabei. Und genau das macht diese beiden Scheiben so einzigartig.

Das polyrhytmische Drumming, das repetitive Riffing, all das, was den Stil Meshuggahs ausmacht ist auch auf diesen CDs vorhanden, nur dass Herr Sharp über all dies noch einzelne Melodiebögen legt. Und diese Melodien sind es, die dafür sorgen, dass sich Cloudkicker nicht anhört wie ein weiterer Meshuggah-Klon. Dies und die tatsache, dass Cloudkicker ohne jeglichen Gesang auskommt.

Auch die Philosophie von Ben, der in seinen Liner-Notes

"This album was recorded for a grand total of $0, and is therefore being distributed for free. If you paid money for this you're a sucker."

schreibt, finde ich großartig. Obwohl ich bei einem Album/einer EP dieser Qualität kein Problem damit hätte, Geld zu bezahlen. Er schreibt weiter:

"Distribute this anywhere and everywhere you see fit. Give credit where credit is due."

Also, holt euch die EP und das Album, hört es an und wenns euch gefällt, gebt es weiter. Ich denke, ich habe meinen Auftrag hiermit erfüllt... oder etwa nicht, Herr Sharp?

Did you ever, while listening to a Meshuggah record, wonder: "What if those guys would once try really hard and incorporate some melodies into their music?" I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Meshuggah, but every once and then one needs a break from all the complexity... and you don't get those from Meshuggah. For everybody who feels exactly the same: I've got just the thing.

Ben Sharp apparently felt the same way and started his one man project Cloudkicker. The EP The Map Is Not The Territory and the LP The Discovery sound like they were written and performed by Meshuggah themselves at times. But Ben Sharp did all of that himself and additionally uses the whole spectrum of emotions for his records... from hate-ridden to life-affirming. And this is what makes these records unique.

Everything Meshuggah stand for, polyrhythmic drumming, repetitive riffing, is in these tracks, but there's more: Mr Sharp adds overlying melodies to his very complex songs. And those melodies make Cloudkicker a lot more then just your average Meshuggah clone. The melodies and the fact that Clodkicker doesn't need vocals.

I also admire Ben's philosophy; in his liner notes, he wrote:

"This album was recorded for a grand total of $0, and is therefore being distributed for free. If you paid money for this you're a sucker."

Although, for a LP/an EP of equivalent quality I would gladly pay some money, no questions asked. Furthermore he wrote:

"Distribute this anywhere and everywhere you see fit. Give credit where credit is due."

So, you people who read this, get the LP/EP, listen to it and if you like it, give it to a friend. I think, my job here is done... is it, Mr Sharp?

The Polar Dream - The Polar Dream EP (2009)

I know, I know... I'm a little late, reviewing this old EP when the five Mexicans have already released their debut album called Follow Me To The Forest, but nevertheless, this EP is worth being reviewed.

With their beautiful melodies and their very positive songs, they have managed to amaze me in a way Sigur Ros did when I first listened to their (). Not that I do want to draw a comparison here, The Polar Dream do not sound like Sigur Ros, they have a very unique sound. They do use the same instruments (Do I hear a Glockenspiel or a Xylophone here and there?), but The Polar Dream create a rock oriented sound, which I find is one of a kind.

Interested? If yes, download it and if you like it, I urge you to support these guys and buy their debut album.

Puentes Llamándome al Unísono - Los Días Felices EP (2008)

Hello everyone, I'm back and started working through our already backed up request-log. The first record I chose to review is called Los Días Felices, which I guess means as much as The Happy Days. And that is exactly what the first track, bearing the same title as the record, sounds like: not upbeat, but it has a very positive and nostalgic vibe to it. This track sounds just beautiful.

The second track, De Regreso A Todos Los Adioses (Back To All Farewells), is a kind of sad, melancholic tune, almost the exact opposite of the first rack. A little bit slower, darker and more grim than the first track, it is very powerful nonetheless.

If you are interested in Ambient/Soundscaping, then this might be just the thing for you.

Álfheimr - These Songs We Sing Will Fade To Silence (2009)

Álfheimr? Da denkt man doch gleich an einen Titel von den Großen Sigur Rós. Und damit tappt man garnicht mal so weit im Dunkeln wie man meinen mag, denn das Prinzip dieser Klangwelten ist ziemlich ähnlich.

Zitiert aus Wikipedia: "Alfheimr oder Lichtelfenheim (altnord. Liusalfheim), auch als Lichtalbenheim, Alfheim oder Albenheim bezeichnet, ist in der nordischen Mythologie die Heimat der hohen und lichten Elfen. Laut der Grimnismal stand Alfheim unter der Herrschaft Freyrs."

Was der Beweggrund war sich nach dieser "Heimat" zu benennen, liegt wohl in den Sternen. Aber genau so mystisch oder auch fantasiereich diese Definition klingen mag, genau so klingt auch die Musik von Álfheimr. Man betritt eine Welt in der alles schön zu sein scheint, sogar das "Hässliche". Ideal für einen ruhigen Abend, eine lange Reise in einem Zug sitzend oder auch einfach nur an einem nebligen Tag am Waldrand dahinschlendernd. Eines ist aber klar, „These Songs We Sing Will Fade to Silence“ erfordert sehr viel Zeit um richtig in den Hörer aufgenommen werden zu können und das ist auch verdammt gut so. Unterstützt diese Band, denn das hat sie verdient!

Álfheimr? I was thinking of the great Sigur Rós right away while reading that band-title. And i wasn’t that close in the dark as i guessed i would be with that thought. The soundscapes of Álfheimr comes pretty close to the Sigur Rós ones.

Quote from Wikipedia: "Alfheim (Old Norse: Ālfheimr, "elf home") is the abode of the Light Elves in Norse mythology and appears also in northern English ballads under the form Elphame (Elfhame, Elfame) as a fairyland sometimes modernized as Elfland (Elfinland, Elvenland)."

I think the motivation for entitling a band like this „elf home“ will be unexplained. But as mystic or fanciful this quote sounds like just as well does the music of Álfheimr. You enter a world in that everything seems to be beautiful even the „ugly“. It’s perfect for a quiet evening alone, a long travel sitting in a lonely train or just lingering along a border of a wood on a foggy day. One is for sure "These Songs We Sing Will Fade to Silence" will take a long time for the listener to be assimilated properly. Support this band, they surely deserve it!

Three Steps To The Ocean - Until Today Becomes Yesterday (2009)

Mit Andrea zufälligerweise in Kontakt getreten, und schnurstracks ein paar Tage später die Debüt-CD „Until Today Becomes Yesterday“ als Geschenk in meinem Postkasten erhalten. Das Artwork war schonmal etwas sehr Besonderes. Ich kannte die Band ja bereits vom „Stones From The Sky“-Sampler von NeuroSounds (2007), nur hatte ich mich damals noch nicht näher damit beschäftigt, weil ja noch kein richtiger Release anstand, aber der Song „Submerged Universe“ hatte mich damals schon fest in seinen Bann gezogen. 2 Jahre später nun dieses wahrliche Meisterwerk.

Ich war sehr überrascht wie eine so ich sag mal „unbekannte“ Band, Größen wie Pelican und Konsorten in den Boden spielen können. Wenn man die Debüt-CD von Three Steps To The Ocean mit den `09er Releases von Pelican, A Storm Of Light, Russian Circles oder auch Andere aus diesem Musikbereich vergleicht, kommt man schnell zu dem Fazit, dass Three Steps To The Ocean alle vorführt! Ich hab selten eine so ambitionierte, offene, instrumentale Platte gehört. Hier wurde sehr viel Schweiß und Geduld in den Details verpackt. Zu keiner Sekunde langweilig oder monoton. Die elektronischen Elemente die darin verpackt sind, sind für mich etwas ganz Neues, rundet das entstehende Ambiente zu 100% ab und hat es in der Art meiner Meinung nach noch nie gegeben.

Stellenweise erinnern sie mich sehr stark an Omega Massif, manchmal wieder Russian Circles-Like, und in einigen Parts an Callisto zu Noir-Zeiten oder auch Cult Of Luna. Der perfekte Einsatz des E-bows, Synthezisers oder auch die Triolenmelodien schaffen auch eine gewisse typische Atmosphäre, die man normal aus diversen Post-Rock-Hymnen bekannt sind.

Für mich neben Porcupine Tree – The Incident und A Storm Of Light - Forgive Us Our Trespasses bis dato das Release des Jahres 2009 und neben Last Minute To Jaffna mein Geheimtipp aus der Sludgeschublade Norditaliens! Dieses Teil kann man ohne Weiters blind kaufen, mehr kann ich dazu nicht sagen!

I got in contact with Andrea by accident a few weeks ago and straightaway there was a CD in my post office box. „Until Today Becomes Yesterday“ was simply a great present to me. The Artwork was something special. I knew the band already from the sampler „Stones From The Sky“ from NeuroSounds (2007). At this time there was no „true“ Record out, but the song „Submerged Universe“ was an outstanding one on this sampler. 2 years later they surprised me again with this truly masterpiece.

I was astonished that such an „unbeknown“ band is able to stamp mammoths like Pelican and Co into the basement with their incredible tunes. If you are on to compare the debut of Three Steps To the Ocean with the releases of `09 of Pelican, A Storm Of Light, Russian Circles other of this genre you will quickly see that TSTTO is messing around with them!
I infrequently have heard such an ambitious, opened, instrumental Record like this one. Very much sweat and patience was put into the details. Never boring or monotone. The electronic elements wrapped into this sound are something new for me and complements the whole issue up to 100%.

In Places TSTTO remind me very much of Omega Massif, at times they are very Russian Circles-likish, and in several parts they sound like Callisto (Noir) or Cult Of Luna. The perfect initiation of the e-bow, the synths or the triplet-melodies produces a typical atmosphere usually known from various Post-Rock-Hymns.

In my opinion „Until Today Becomes Yesterday“ is the release of the year 2009 so far (alongside with Porcupine Tree – The Incident and A Storm Of Light - Forgive Us Our Trespasses). And Three Steps To The Ocean is my insider tip in sludge from north-italy (in addition to Last Minute To Jaffna)!

Doomina - 290809 (EP) (2009)

Ganz weit abseits ihrer üblichen Wege wandern Doomina auf ihrer neuen EP, schlicht und einfach 290809 betitelt. Im Gegensatz zum Stonerdoom, den man sonst so von den Kärntnern erwartet, bieten Daniel (der ohne die anderen drei Doominas unterwegs ist) ist dieses Mal mit der Unterstützung von Marian P. von Cleave einen First-Take-Studio-Jam, der am 29.08.2009 zwischen 0 und 6 Uhr entstanden ist. Der Track heißt Hollow und dauert genau 19 Minuten und 34 Sekunden.

Das sind dann 19 Minuten und 34 Sekunden pure Experimentierfreude mit vielen Samples, programmierten, monotonen Drums und diesen fantastischen Gitarrenmelodien, die im Alleingang den Song tragen. Würde man versuchen, dieses Lied in ein Genre einzuordnen, so würde ich Psychedelic Post Rock wählen, aber dieses Schubladendenken wird dieser EP einfach nicht gerecht. Diese EP ist wahrscheinlich der Versuch, einmal aus dem musikalischen Alltagstrott auszubrechen und einmal etwas auszuprobieren, was auf einer herkömmlichen Veröffentlichung wohl kaum Platz finden würde.

Und genau das zeigt mir, dass Daniel und Marian wirklich gute Musiker sind und vor allem den Mut haben, zwischen den Stühlen zu stehen und vielleicht die Fans mal vor den Kopf zu stoßen mit einem absolut untypischen Release... so, wie es z.B. auch schon Radiohead mit Kid A oder Disillusion mit Gloria gemacht haben. Meine Herren, ich ziehe den Hut vor Ihnen und Ihrer Experimentierfreudigkeit und Ihnen, werter Leser und werte Leserin, kann ich nur empfehlen, sich auf dieses Experiment einzulassen. Sie werden es ganz sicher nicht bereuen! Die Covergestaltung wurde wieder einmal unter Einfluss des Songs von Reinhold Rittinger in die Hand genommen.

On Doomina’s new EP they are walking afar offside of their general style of creating music. The EP is easily called 290809. In contrast to Stonerdoom which is normally expected in relation to Carinthia, Daniel (Doomina) is working together with Marian P. (Cleave). This is a First-Take-Studio-Jam started at 00:00 on the 29th of August `09. It consists of one track called Hollow and is about 20 minutes long.

20 minutes of pure delight in experimentation with a lot of samples, programmed, monotone drums and all of those amazing guitartunes, that are single-handedly wearing the whole song.
If one is on to categorize it into a genre i would choose Psychedelic Rock. But i don’t think that this cerebration is deserved for this EP. For me this EP is the effort to break off the daily grind, trying new stuff, that possibly wouldn’t take place on an usual release.

This is exactly that what shows me that Daniel and Marian are really good musicians and that they have the bravery to stand between the chairs, maybe affronting the fans a little bit with this atypical Recording... just like Radiohead did with Kid A or Disillusion with Gloria. I’m saluting to Daniel and Marian and their delight in experimentation. Get involved into this experiment! You won’t be disappointed! The Artwork is once again the creative hand of Reinhold Rittinger influenced by this Song.

Heirs - Alchera (2009)

Heirs aus Australien treten den Beweis an, dass in Down Under nicht nur geerdeter Bluesrock gespielt wird. Stattdessen gibt es auf ihrem Debut Alchera eine recht eigenständige, unheilvolle Version instrumentalen Post Rocks zu hören.

Der Opener Plague Asphyx ist ein fieser, zäher, monotoner Industrialbrocken der auf Zerstörung aus ist und den Hörer dementsprechend verstört zurücklässt. Doch mit Beginn des zweiten Stückes kann dieser erst einmal durchatmen.

Mockery beginnt mit einem leisen, zerbrechlichen Melodiefragment, das auf Versöhnung aus ist. Allzu gemütlich sollte man es sich dennoch nicht machen. Schon bald gesellt sich die Rhythmusfraktion dazu und aus der fragilen Melodie erwächst eine raue Soundlandschaft aus mächtigen Riffs schweren Drums und einer nicht zu verachtenden Menge purstem Noise.

Und genau in diesem Spektrum zwischen leise/zerbrechlich und laut/mächtig bewegt sich die Band dann auch im weiteren Verlauf des Albums. Dabei weiß sie die Spannung und eine unheilvolle Atmosphäre gekonnt aufrecht zu halten. Es wird auf Alchera weder zu romantisch noch pathetisch und niemals kitschig. Stattdessen bewahrt sich die Band eine angenehme Schroffheit und Direktheit, die sie von anderen Instrumentaltätern abhebt. Dazu trägt sicherlich auch die natürliche, trockene Produktion bei, die alle Instrumente und Details gut zur Geltung bringt.

Heirs from Australia submit evidence that in Down Under they do not only play down-to-earth bluesrock. There debut Alchera delivers a quite self-contained and baleful version of instrumental post rock.

The first track Plague Asphyx is a nasty, viscous, monotonous industrialtrack which strives for destruction. After that, the listener is all in a fluster. But with the beginning of the second track one gets the chance to recover.

As if to propitiate, Mockery starts quietly, with a fragile fragment of melody. But, don't get too comfortable! With the entry of the rhythmsection the fragile melody grows up to a cragged landscape of sound, compromising of powerful riffs, heavy drums and pure noise.

Navigating between those poles, quiet/fragile on the one hand and loud/powerful on the other, the band is able to sustain supense and to create a baleful atmosphere throughout the whole album. Never getting to romantic, pathetic or even kitschy Heirs' music is pleaseantly rough and direct. In this case, they differ from other instrumental bands. This roughness also emerges from the dry and natural production which accentuates all instruments and details.

Pet Slimmers Of The Year - Pet Slimmers Of The Year EP (2009)

Harte Riffs treffen auf Ambient, wunderschöne Melodien treffen auf Doom-Passagen, kurz: alles, was gefällt, ist erlaubt bei Pet Slimmers Of The Year. Auf ihrer selbstbetitelten EP bieten die drei Bandmitglieder (Gowan, Vinten, McKenna) aus Großbritannien Post-Metal, wie er, zu mindest mir, gefällt... nicht zu puristisch mit ganz viel Abwechslung. Aber das ist wohl auch zu erwarten bei einer Band, die sowohl Mono, als auch Meshuggah zu ihren Einflüssen zählt.

Ein bissschen Post-Rock hier (wie zum Beginn von World Without Stars), ein bisschen Doom da (wie zum Beginn vom Opener A Letter To His Father) und dazwischen immer wieder diese Riffgewitter, die den vorher sorgfältig konstruierten Spannungbogen dann zum bersten bringen... und genau hier würde ich mir persönlich wünschen, dass sie öfters dem Chaos freien lauf lassen, so wie es mir bei den meisten Post Metal-/Post Rock-Outputs geht.

Pet Slimmers Of The Year erfinden das Rad zwar nicht neu, liefern aber eine solide EP ab, die den Fans der oben genannten Genres bestimmt gefallen und vielleicht sogar ein paar Neulinge zum eingeschworenen Kreis der Post-Metaller hinzufügen wird.

Heavy riffs meet ambient soundscapes, beautiful melodies meet doomy passages, in short: everything goes on this self-titled EP by Pet Slimmers Of The Year. On said release, the three guys from Great Britain (Gowan, Vinten, McKenna) play that kind of post metal, that at least I like very much... not too puristic with a broad variety in styles. But what else would you expect when a band cites both Mono and Meshuggah as influences?

A little bit of post rock here (like in the beginning of World Without Stars), a little bit of doom there (like in the beginning of the opener called A Letter To His Father) with that beloved apocalypse in the middle... but if I had any say in this, that apocalypse would be more brutal and chaotic. That's what I don't like about most of the puristic post rock-/post metal-outputs, but then again, what do I know.

What Pet Slimmers Of The Year deliver on this EP is nothing new, but it is still very good and exciting. Most people who are into post metal will love this record and maybe, some people who have never heard of that genre will learn to love this beautiful music... through this EP.

Spaces - Voyage (2008-2009)

Endlich ist es fertig, das Album, das mich nun über ein halbes Jahr immer wieder fasziniert hat, dem Monat um Monat ein weiterer Track hinzugefügt wurde, bis das Kunstwerk endlich vollendet war... wie ihr schon lesen könnt, begeistert mich Voyage immer noch so, wie im Januar, als ich meine erste Rezension geschrieben hab, damals zu den ersten 4 Tracks.

Nun liegen mir die letzten beiden Tracks, The Death Of A Drifter Part I & II, vor und ich muss sagen, dass diese ein unglaublich facettenreiches Album würdig beenden. Vor allem der Longtrack The Death Of A Drifter Part II vereint alle Stärken, Stile (Rock, Folk, Ambient, etc.) und Gefühle des Albums in majestätischen 17 Minuten und 42 Sekunden.

Abschließend möchte ich mich bei Franco Colon und Duke Ahrens für ein wunderschönes Stück Musik bedanken und wünsche ihnen alles Gute auf ihrer weiteren musikalischen Reise.

The record that caught my attention for over half a year, that was put together track by track, month for month 'till this work of art was perfect is finished at last... and all of you can see that I am still amazed by the beauty of that record called Voyage... still as amazed as I was in January, when I first heard the first four songs.

Now the last two tracks, The Death Of A Drifter Part I & II, are on my hard drive and I have to say that they are the perfect ending to an incredibly multi-faceted record. The last track, The Death Of A Drifter Part II, combines all the strengths, emotions and all the different styles of music (Rock, Folk, Ambient, etc.), clocking in at a majestic 17 minutes and 42 seconds.

Now, there's nothing left for me to do but thank Franco Colon and Duke Ahrens for that fantastic and beautiful record and wish them all the best on their future voyages... voyages in music and in real life!
