Dancing On Debris - …Of Our Self-Made Collapse (2009)
Kompliment!

Hardcore from NRW [Germany] reading this my interest awoke. So I downloaded “…of our self-made collapse” onto the HDD and here we go.
I have to admit sometimes Dancing on Debris sound strongly like Buried Inside for me. Specially the first Song “Nachtlied” (“Lullaby”) after the Intro let`s me think “What Buried Inside have a new song?”. But this isn`t meant deprecatingly – I love Buried Inside – it`s just amazing how close Dancing on Debris get to the sound of these guys from Ottawa and this is one of the biggest compliments I can make when it`s about Hardcore. This skilful changes between desperate, brutal, shrilled anger and calm, melancholic and apocalyptic melodies are impressive. Above any reproach and always convincing the band serves kick-ass riffs and catches you with beautiful melodies and these hopeless vocals.
Worth to be mentioned is the change between English and German vocals. For people not speaking German this language seems to sound pretty hard and aggressive maybe like Russian does. So I guess it`s just consequent to use German for hardcore music. Dancing on Debris show these perfect – German and English are going hand in and even the soft, spoken German lyrics sound great to me.
There`s just one downer: The last song “Till the End” of this completely great record tries to con you with it`s approximately 35 min. of playtime. You might thing “Wow that song must be a monster” yeah that`s what I thought to. But it turns out to be just 35 min. of shellac- sizzling noises with some quite short instrumental passages. I`m not an enemy of “eternal silence” at the end of an record to integrate some bonus tracks or something like that. But honestly 35min!?! There`s really no need to make this one that long.
But at the end all that`s left to say is that “…of our self-made collapse” by Dancing on Debris is a great hardcore record. A soundtrack for dancing on debris which perfectly draws the picture of this grim place we might live in.

Hen:ge - Theory Of Despair (EP) (Remastered) (2009)

Also zurück zur Sache. Hen:ge? Was heißt das?
„The investigator was staring at the sealed door again. Confused thoughts were spinning upwards his head while a downshifting feeling cought him. He knew that the tremors in his hands wouldn`t be gone until he executes "their" orders. His eyes went through uncomfortable scenery, behind him narrow stairs, the exit into the dark and cold night, knowing he couldn`t reach it before "they" catch him. Captured in a small room, filled with sheets, on their surface dust particles reminding him of them laying there a long time covering dates of death, for only he knew that no one would care for them. With cerebral anxiety his shaking hand moved towards the door. Only the vessels would make "them" disappear He knew nightshift will begin...“

We had this review already a while ago! But Hen:ge overworked the songs again, cut it a little bit, upgraded it, remastered it and the 2 overlength songs really sound better! Into the bargain this package has a better MP3-quality. So, download it and devote to this demonic soundtrack!
Those who're aware of Hen:ge already, might know what to expect when the 3 guys from Regensburg, Bavaria place their guitars around their necks and take the drumstick into their hands. Hen:ge? What does that mean? Henge means appearance of an ghost in Japanese. When listening to the down-tempo-tunes of theirs, one might realize why. The music creeps along. Dark tones. The drum's BPM low. The knive seems to be within reach. If you don't have yourself under control, better keep your hands off this soundcollage! A horror-flick set to music. The concept behind this unique band is, getting together, choosing a more or less morbid subject and dance in step around it, while jamming to it. Straightaway this will be recorded and released, what seems like an awesome thing in my opinion, because usually first ideas come off best. When tinkering on your songs for too long, you'll run the risk of loosing your goal out of sight - a thing that's certainly not happening with Hen:ge. You're able to get a feel of the theme, feel what was going on the heads and hearts of the musicians, at the moment of the recordings. Tobias from Hen:ge told me the story, to which they played beforehand:
„The investigator was staring at the sealed door again. Confused thoughts were spinning upwards his head while a downshifting feeling cought him. He knew that the tremors in his hands wouldn`t be gone until he executes "their" orders. His eyes went through uncomfortable scenery, behind him narrow stairs, the exit into the dark and cold night, knowing he couldn`t reach it before "they" catch him. With cerebral anxiety his shaking hand moved towards the door. Only the vessels would make "them" disappear He knew nightshift will begin...“
It is great, that the listener is given a certain freedom, to approach the theme individually. Reading the story, looking at the cover of Theory of Despair at the same time, while listening to the EP, one might only guess, what the story might center on. This release is definitely worth checking out! Kudos to the band, Björn, Matthias and Tobias (who contributes a lot to the positive feel of our forums, which is a thing we truely appreciate)

Three Steps To The Ocean - Until Today Becomes Yesterday (2009)

I got in contact with Andrea by accident a few weeks ago and straightaway there was a CD in my post office box. „Until Today Becomes Yesterday“ was simply a great present to me. The Artwork was something special. I knew the band already from the sampler „Stones From The Sky“ from NeuroSounds (2007). At this time there was no „true“ Record out, but the song „Submerged Universe“ was an outstanding one on this sampler. 2 years later they surprised me again with this truly masterpiece.
I was astonished that such an „unbeknown“ band is able to stamp mammoths like Pelican and Co into the basement with their incredible tunes. If you are on to compare the debut of Three Steps To the Ocean with the releases of `09 of Pelican, A Storm Of Light, Russian Circles other of this genre you will quickly see that TSTTO is messing around with them!
I infrequently have heard such an ambitious, opened, instrumental Record like this one. Very much sweat and patience was put into the details. Never boring or monotone. The electronic elements wrapped into this sound are something new for me and complements the whole issue up to 100%.
In Places TSTTO remind me very much of Omega Massif, at times they are very Russian Circles-likish, and in several parts they sound like Callisto (Noir) or Cult Of Luna. The perfect initiation of the e-bow, the synths or the triplet-melodies produces a typical atmosphere usually known from various Post-Rock-Hymns.
In my opinion „Until Today Becomes Yesterday“ is the release of the year 2009 so far (alongside with Porcupine Tree – The Incident and A Storm Of Light - Forgive Us Our Trespasses). And Three Steps To The Ocean is my insider tip in sludge from north-italy (in addition to Last Minute To Jaffna)!

Doomina - 290809 (EP) (2009)

On Doomina’s new EP they are walking afar offside of their general style of creating music. The EP is easily called 290809. In contrast to Stonerdoom which is normally expected in relation to Carinthia, Daniel (Doomina) is working together with Marian P. (Cleave). This is a First-Take-Studio-Jam started at 00:00 on the 29th of August `09. It consists of one track called Hollow and is about 20 minutes long.
20 minutes of pure delight in experimentation with a lot of samples, programmed, monotone drums and all of those amazing guitartunes, that are single-handedly wearing the whole song.
If one is on to categorize it into a genre i would choose Psychedelic Rock. But i don’t think that this cerebration is deserved for this EP. For me this EP is the effort to break off the daily grind, trying new stuff, that possibly wouldn’t take place on an usual release.
This is exactly that what shows me that Daniel and Marian are really good musicians and that they have the bravery to stand between the chairs, maybe affronting the fans a little bit with this atypical Recording... just like Radiohead did with Kid A or Disillusion with Gloria. I’m saluting to Daniel and Marian and their delight in experimentation. Get involved into this experiment! You won’t be disappointed! The Artwork is once again the creative hand of Reinhold Rittinger influenced by this Song.

Finneyerkes - Bastard (2009)

Gorgeous melodies meet tender electronica
Again a work from the electronica and post-rock duo Finneyerkes. Bastard is a pure instrumental work, a touching vibrance of senses and a slice of trueness in each fret of the guitar they play. Bastard was born while Finneyerkes were still working on their here presented release Without End. There were a few tracks which didn't fit into the concept of Without End so the two Americans decided to make this sideline project Bastard that is - in fact- no a sideline but a headline of their works. A wonderful piece of melancholy and sadness, so true, so honest and so gorgeous.
Finneyerkes do not care about any clichés or "rules" in music, they have their very own style, a rare fact in these times. The catchy melodies of Bastard and the deep feelings that grow while listening to this work (just like on Without End, but even stronger) make you addictive to their works and you can't get out of it until you reach awareness again (mostly trough noises in your reach). Bastard is completed by a featured track that is made together with Yawning (a highlight by the way!), and a mix by Ceylon.
Read the words of Finneyerkes to the development of Bastard:
"This album was born when we were halfway through recording Without End. We had a few songs that we really liked and we didn't know what we were going to do with them. Those tracks were "Cobain featuring Yawning", "Lark", "Honeymoon at the Holocaust Museum" and "DisMIX featuring Cylon". we had no idea what we were going to do with them but we knew we didn't want to throw them away. none of them fit the style of Without End. we tried tacking a few of them on Without End but they stuck out like sore thumbs. we held onto them and when we were about 99 percent done, Randy said "why don't we just release 2 albums?" it sounded like a good enough idea. we weren't sure if anyone would want to hear 2 new full lengths from us but maybe a couple would. so we stalled a little longer and finished up some of the tracks we had kept locked away. we re-worked some parts and changed whole songs around and here we are. this is probably our most varied album. there are hints of classical, acoustic, electronic, a little bit of blues guitar playing, and a lot of spacey things going through the headphones. this is the album where words couldn't say what we were feeling. we became a better band and better friends trying to communicate by just playing. we're really proud of this album and we hope all of you enjoy it. thanks so much for listening. it means more than anything to us."
