Auch diese EP von Bella Watt ist die pure Abwechslung. Der Song "Monocular Dystrophy" könnte ein Song von A Perfect Circle sein. Generell erinnern mich die Gesangslinien sehr an einen MJK bei APC. Viel Spaß.

Bella Watt - The Mirror Test (2009)

Bella Watt nannte sich eine sehr sympatische Band aus New York. Zur Zeit scheinen sie auch aufgelöst zu sein. Dennoch hat uns Jeff, der Bassist der Gruppe, gebeten ihre Alben Online zu stellen. Sie kreiieren eine ganz besondere Mischung aus den verschiedensten Stilrichtungen und überzeugen mit Abwechslung. Der Gesang passt fügtsich optimal in die Soundstrukturen ein und das Output kann sich wirklich hören lassen. Ein Werk, das nicht in einem Hördurchlauf bezwungen werden kann. Das Album entwickelt sich mit jedem Mal.

Bella Watt was a very likeable band from NYC. At this time it semms to be that the band is broken up, but Jeff (the bassist) nevertheless asked us to put their releases online. Bella Watt created an especial mix of different genres and satisfies the listener with alternation. The voices fits perfectly into the sound-structures. For these reasons the output is really enjoyable but i think this is a release that nobody is able to grab at once. The album is developing itself with every run.

Red Light Chamber Choir - We're In Trouble But We Don't Know What To Do (2007)

Red Light Chamber Choir trumpfen mit ihrem ganz eigenen sehr düsteren PostRock-Stil auf. Man verliert sich in Gedanken, in traurigen Gedanken. Für mich der deprimierendste PostRock, der mir in den letzten Monaten untergekommen ist. Leider ist dieses wunderbare Projekt derzeit auf "Eis" gelegt. Auf jeden Fall äußerst empfehlenswert!

The trump-card of Red Light Chamber Choir is the very dire style of PostRock. You lose yourself in mind, a very doleful mind. For me RLCC is one of the most depressive PostRock-Bands i discovered in a long time. This band is also on hiatus. I hope they'll be back soon. By all means really really commendable!

The Weak Men - Weak Men DOG (2007)

Schöner, melancholischer PostRock! Erinnert mich sehr stark an EF oder Immanu El. Die Band hat sich leider schon aufgelöst. Auf LastFM findet man sie ungerechtermaßen in der Gruppe "Underapreciated Post-Rock Bands", welchem ich Voll und Ganz zustimme. Sie waren und sind underrated. Diese Band hätte es verdient gehabt, mehr gehört zu werden. Woran es gelegen hat, dass sie keinen Durchbruch hatten liegt in den Sternen.

Beautiful, melancholic PostRock! They remind me on EF or Immanu El. The band broke up too early. Sadly you can find them on LastFM in the group "Underapreciated Post-Rock Bands" that i have to agree with. Unfortunately they are/were really underrated. This band should have had more listeners. At least you can help them now and listen them in memorial! I can't understand why they did not have a breakthrough in this genre.

Fire Walk With Me! - Jenova EP (2009)

"Hast du die Band gestern gesehen? Ich hab mich anfangs so gefragt: 'Fangen die auch noch an? Gehts jetzt mal richtig los?' Aber dann, so nach ein paar Minuten, war ich wahnsinnig fasziniert von diesen stetig wiederholten Melodien... hat mich ein bisschen an den Psychedelic Rock der 70er erinnert..."

So kommentierte ein Kumpel von mir den Auftritt von Fire Walk With Me! vor dem besetzten Hörsaal H2 der Regensburger Universität. Da er in der Welt des Post Rock/Post Hardcore nicht allzu sehr bewandert ist, sind ihm keine anderen Assoziationen eingefallen... und doch kann ich dem Mann nur zustimmen, wäre aber selbst wahrscheinlich kaum auf die Idee gekommen, rifflastigen Post Hardcore-Epen mit Psychedelic Rock zu vergleichen.

Die vorliegende EP der vier Regensburger enthält zwar nur 3 Tracks (2 Stücke), bringt es trotzdem auf die stolze Laufzeit von 34 Minuten. Kernstück dieser EP ist das 22 minütige Jenova (Jenova: Origin, Jenova: Destination), das ein paar von euch eventuell schon Live um die Ohren geschleudert bekommen haben... auf den lokalen Konzerten, die ich besucht habe, gehörte es definitiv immer zur Setlist.

Und nun liegt dieses Monster endlich auch digital und sogar als physische Kopie vor... leider habe ich bis jetzt noch keine EP bekommen, aber vielleicht ändert sich das ja noch (ist ja bald Weihnachten). Sowohl vom Sound als auch vom Inhalt ist diese EP über alle Zweifel erhaben und als Bonus gibts noch eine Extended Acoustic Version von Regina Maris, die sich zu einem meiner Lieblingstracks aus dem Jahre 2009 entwickelt hat.

Also, das ist es, mein persönliches Weihnachtsgeschenk für unsere hochgeachteten Blog-Leser und für alle, die es noch werden wollen. Frohe Weihnachten an euch und auch an das ganze Silence is also a Sound-Team!

"Did you see that band the other day? At first, I was wondering whether they ever got started, but then, after about five minutes, I was completely enchanted by those steadily repeating melodies... it reminded me a lot of those psychedelic rock bands from the seventies..."

... said a friend of mine after a Fire Walk With Me! concert at the University of Regensburg, playing for all of those who were on strike (and still are). Not knowing anything about post hardcore or post rock, that was the only kind of music he could connect those songs to. Speaking for myself, I would never have come to comparing FWWM! to psychedelic rock bands from the seventies... and yet, man's got a point!

This EP I am listening to at this very moment contains only three tracks, but with a running time of 34 minutes. And at the core of this EP lies the epic Jenova (Jenova: Origin, Jenova: Destination) which some of you might already have heard live since it usually is on every setlist.

And finally, this monster has landed, both as a digital release as well as a physical copy... unfortunately, I haven't got my hands on a physical copy yet... but hopefully, this will change soon (Xmas is only a few days away). This EP is fantastic, both sound and content are perfect, and as an additional treat, they have put an extended accoustic version of one of their early songs, Regina Maris, on this EP. That track has grown very dear to me and is definitely on my Top Tracks of 2009 list.

So, this is it, my personal Xmas gift to all of our present and future readers. Merry Xmas to you and the whole Silence is also a Sound team!

marionette ID - Emptiness Will Change Your Mind (2008)

Dass Ungarn tolle PostRock-Künstler hat, haben erst vor Kurzem Képzelt Város unter Beweis gestellt. marionette ID aus Budapest kreiieren eine ganz besondere Mischung aus PostRock und IndieRock. Von der Atmosphäre der Songs her erinnern sie mich sehr stark an die italienischen Giardini Di Mirò, was so Einiges heißen mag. In fast 50 Minuten packen sie mit „Emptiness Will Change Your Mind“ 8 starke Songs, die zum mitsingen animieren. So „leer“ scheint die CD doch nicht zu sein. Und „leer“ wird sie auch bestimmt nicht ausgehen. Sie hat Beifall verdient!

Képzelt Város recently showed us that Hungary has born good PostRock-Artists too. marionette ID from Budapest are creating an exceptionally mix between PostRock and IndieRock. The atmospheres of the songs reminds me very hard of the Giardini Di Mirò ones and that’s saying something. In nearly 50 minutes on „Emptiness Will Change Your Mind“ they've wrapped up 8 really good songs which incite one to sing along. The CD seems not to be as „empty“ as said in the title. And i think it also won’t go away „empty“-handed in the future. It definitely deserves approval!

Locomotora - Locomotora (2009)

Locomotora machen mich einfach sprachlos. Warum sie noch ohne richtigem Label sind, für mich ein Rätsel. Wenn ich einen Film drehen würde, würde ich Locomotora verpflichten den Soundtrack dazu zu gestalten. Musikalisch, arrangementtechnisch und produktionstechnisch glänzt die Selftitled der jungen Herren wie eine neue Münze. Drei der insgesamt fünf Songs auf dem Album sind über der 12-Minuten Marke, das brauchen die Songs aber auch. Sie entwickeln sich allesamt sehr langsam und tragend. Man gleitet somit ganz langsam in ihre Welt und erlebt tranceartig ihre aufgenommenen Emotionen am eigenen Leibe. Ein Muss! Für mich generell eines der schönsten und aufwendigsten PostRock-Scheiben aus dem Jahre 2009!

Locomotora makes me speechless. It's a riddle for me that this band has got no real label so far. If i would make a movie i would definitely engage Locomotora for writing the soundtrack for it. Musically, in arrangement and in production the selftitled-album of the young guys gloss as a new coin. Three of the five songs overshoots the 12-minute-mark. They all grow very slowly and bearing. You're slipping steady into their world and will learn those recorded emotions the hard way. Locomotora is just a Must! For me it's one of the most beautiful and most complex postrock-works from 2009!

Képzelt Város - Mit Nekem (2009)

Unsere Freunde Képzelt Város aus Ungarn haben ihre erste Full-Length „Mit Nekem“ am Start. Schon der Opener D2 (im Preview anzuhören) zeigt euch was auf dieser CD zu erwarten ist. Und zwar PostRock allererster Güte. Melancholisch um alles um sich herum vergessen zu können, dynamisch und experimentell um nicht mit Langeweile abzuschrecken, episch mit Gitarrenwänden die unter die Haut fahren und sich steigernd um auf harmonischen Melodien getragen ans sehnsüchtige Ziel zu gelangen. Mit Nekem ist ein wahres Meisterwerk und erinnert teilweise sehr stark an die großen Mono. Dass der Gesang auf ungarisch stattfindet trägt der Atmosphäre sehr positiv bei.

Wir freuen uns wahnsinnig, als Our Ceasing Voice, mit ihnen im Frühjahr in Budapest und Wien gemeinsam auf der Bühne stehen zu dürfen. Anhören, Unbedingt!

Einige Male Live gesehen, jedes Mal ein Erlebnis gewesen. Dirty Sun Jazz ist eine Liveband wie sie im Buche steht. Auf der Bühne wird ordentlich Gas gegeben und das Publikum zum mitmachen animiert. Nach endlos vielen Auftritten haben sie „endlich“ ein paar ihrer Stücke eingespielt und physisch veröffentlicht. Das Ergebnis ist mehr als nur befriedigend, beinhaltet 5 Tracks und überzeugt mit ehrlichem Wüstenrock. Holt es euch!

Dirty Sun Jazz? Dirty Sánchez?

Zitiert aus Wikipedia: "Als Dirty Sánchez wird bezeichnet, wenn der aktive Partner beim Analverkehr unmittelbar nach der Ejakulation mit dem Finger in den Anus des passiven Partners eindringt und dann eine Mischung aus Sperma und Kot unter die Nase des passiven Partners streicht. Es ist keine tatsächlich verbreitete Sexualpraktik, übte aber eine große Wirkung auf die Popkultur aus, in der vor allem der absurd-komische Aspekt betont wurde.
Die Namensgebung wurde gewählt, da dies den Eindruck eines „mexikanischen Bärtchens“ erwecken soll. I saw Dirty Sun Jazz several times live, and every time was an experience for me. Dirty Sun Jazz is a „Liveband“ over and over. There are no constraints on stage. They rock like hell and the crowd is animated to rock with `em. Finally after endless live-gigs they recorded a few of their compositions to release it physically and digitally for you. The output is more than only satisfying. It includes 5 tracks and scores with true desert-rock. Check it out!

Embers - Embers (EP) (2009)

Embers aus London sind mit allen Wassern gewaschen. Die 5er Kombo beweist mit ihrer ersten Ep, dass sie musikalisch zu den ganz Großen gezählt werden können. The Ocean, Burst oder Irreversible sind Bands, die man am ehesten vergleichen kann. Alles Bands, die ich liebe und die ich hauptsächlich im Auto höre um zu zeigen wer der Boss der Straße ist, haha.

Einfach ideal um die Seele baumeln zu lassen, Aggressionen loszuwerden, mitzusingen, mitzumoshen, weißGottwasnoch... Falls Robin Staps wieder einmal Leute zum touren mit The Ocean brauchen sollte, könnte er problemlos bei Embers nachfragen. Sie besitzen das Zeug um bei The Ocean aushelfen zu können. Laden, Moshen!

Embers from London are up to every trick. With their first EP the 5-men-combo are demonstrating, that they can be counted among with the greats of this genre. In my opinion The Ocean, Burst or Irreversible are bands that can be compared with the sounds of Embers. This are all bands that I love and I mainly hear while driving in my car. Of course, to show who's the boss of the road, haha.

Joking aside. Embers are perfect to dangle your soul, get rid of aggressions, to shout along with it, to mosh, just everything... If Robin Staps would tour again with his project The Ocean and they would need competent musicians for it, they could easily ask the Embers members (just a play on words), because they definitely have the competence to help Robin out. Load it, Mosh! You won’t regret!

Die Gründe für den Sampler

Manchmal gibt es Tage an denen einfach mal angesagt ist daß einem der Kragen platzt. Da wird einem klar, daß man mit einem kostenlosen Angebot das man bietet, recht hilflos ist wenn Inhalte einfach kommerziell genutzt werden obwohl sie eigentlich für umme sind!

So bietet z.B eine Mp3-Suchmaschine die Musik zum Download an! So weit ist dagegen ja auch nichts einzuwenden! So lange das alles auch für lau bleibt. Die Möglichkeit bestand ja auch das Zeug kostenlos auf die Festplatte zu bannen!

Da war Endstation für meine Toleranz!

Álfheimr - These Songs We Sing Will Fade To Silence (2009)

Álfheimr? Da denkt man doch gleich an einen Titel von den Großen Sigur Rós. Und damit tappt man garnicht mal so weit im Dunkeln wie man meinen mag, denn das Prinzip dieser Klangwelten ist ziemlich ähnlich.

Zitiert aus Wikipedia: "Alfheimr oder Lichtelfenheim (altnord. Liusalfheim), auch als Lichtalbenheim, Alfheim oder Albenheim bezeichnet, ist in der nordischen Mythologie die Heimat der hohen und lichten Elfen. Laut der Grimnismal stand Alfheim unter der Herrschaft Freyrs."

Was der Beweggrund war sich nach dieser "Heimat" zu benennen, liegt wohl in den Sternen. Aber genau so mystisch oder auch fantasiereich diese Definition klingen mag, genau so klingt auch die Musik von Álfheimr. Man betritt eine Welt in der alles schön zu sein scheint, sogar das "Hässliche". Ideal für einen ruhigen Abend, eine lange Reise in einem Zug sitzend oder auch einfach nur an einem nebligen Tag am Waldrand dahinschlendernd. Eines ist aber klar, „These Songs We Sing Will Fade to Silence“ erfordert sehr viel Zeit um richtig in den Hörer aufgenommen werden zu können und das ist auch verdammt gut so. Unterstützt diese Band, denn das hat sie verdient!

Álfheimr? I was thinking of the great Sigur Rós right away while reading that band-title. And i wasn’t that close in the dark as i guessed i would be with that thought. The soundscapes of Álfheimr comes pretty close to the Sigur Rós ones.

Quote from Wikipedia: "Alfheim (Old Norse: Ālfheimr, "elf home") is the abode of the Light Elves in Norse mythology and appears also in northern English ballads under the form Elphame (Elfhame, Elfame) as a fairyland sometimes modernized as Elfland (Elfinland, Elvenland)."

I think the motivation for entitling a band like this „elf home“ will be unexplained. But as mystic or fanciful this quote sounds like just as well does the music of Álfheimr. You enter a world in that everything seems to be beautiful even the „ugly“. It’s perfect for a quiet evening alone, a long travel sitting in a lonely train or just lingering along a border of a wood on a foggy day. One is for sure "These Songs We Sing Will Fade to Silence" will take a long time for the listener to be assimilated properly. Support this band, they surely deserve it!

Esoteric - Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum (2004)

Wenn man morgens so aus dem Fenster blickt, sieht jetzt im Herbst alles ziemlich grau und trist aus. Langsam schleppt man sich durch Nebelschwaden lustlos zur Arbeit und in den letzten zwei Wochen habe ich das zur Musik von Esoteric gemacht. Die Stimmung, die die 3 Briten auf Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum eingefangen haben passt perfekt zu diesen tristen, trüben Herbsttagen, an denen es sowohl dunkel ist, wenn man sich zur Arbeit begibt als auch, wenn man sein Büro verlässt.

Funeral Doom, so nennt man wohl diese Art von Musik, ist ein Genre, an dem wohl nicht all zu viele Leute Gefallen finden können. Das wir mit sehr großer Wahrscheinlichkeit auch auf die Leser dieses Blogs zutreffen. Vor allem die Death Metal growls könnten einige der Post Rock Fans hier verschrecken.

Trotz all der Düsternis und der Hoffnungslosigkeit gibt es auf diesem Album Melodien, deren Schönheit über alles dunkle und düstere dominiert... ein Hauch von Sonne an einem sonst grauen Herbsttag. Diese Momente sind zwar sehr selten, aber doch immens wichtig... denn 51 Minuten absolute Dunkelheit können und wollen wohl nur eingefleischte Fans dieses Genres ertragen.

Insgesamt gibts von mir eine definitive Empfehlung für Fans des Genres, aber die werden die Band wohl sowieso schon kennen. Für alle, die sich nicht sicher sind, was sie von meiner Beschreibung halten sollen, unten gibts wie immer ein Preview... mir gefällts auf jeden Fall.

When looking out of the window every morning, I again and again have to realize how greyish and gloomy everything appears... and while listlessly going to work, I have been listening to Esoteric for the last two weeks. Those three guys (they were only three back then, now there's six of them) took all of those attributes you would normally ascribe to a dreary autumn day and put them on their fantastic LP Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum... that's why this record is perfect for all those gloomy days, where there's darkness when you get up in the morning and also when you leave your office at night.

Funeral doom, that's what Esoteric's blend of music is generally called and for most people, it will be nearly impossible to listen to. Unfortunately, that's also going to be true for a lot of visitors on this Blog, especially the death metal growls might scare a lot of our post-rock fans.

But, harsh vocals and melancholy aside, there's a lot of really beautyful melodies on this record, a glimpse of light on an otherwise dreary day one might say. These moments are rare, yet vital for this record, because 51 minutes of concentrated melancholy and gloom would be a little bit much for listeners that don't absolutely love funeral doom.

All in all, I can give a definity recommendation for all fans of this particular genre, but hey, listen to me preaching into the choir. For all of you, who are not sure what to think or who can't decypher my mindless brabbling, there's a preview below.

Old World Vulture - Old World Vulture (EP) (2009)

Oh Kanada, Eishockey, staatliche Krankenversicherung und Indie/Post-Rock Bands mit leichtem Electronic Einschlag.

Old World Vulture stehen in der Tradition von den rockigeren Werken von Broken Social Scene oder Mogwai und auf ihrer selbstbetitelten EP dröhnen Gitarren zu wilden Rhythmen, entspannte Synthesizer erklingen zu sanfter Melodie und dann wird wieder richtig aufgedreht.
Die 3 Songs sind gut strukturiert, atmosphärische Teile wechseln mit energiegeladenen Parts und die Spannung wird von Anfang an aufrechterhalten.
Bei einem Keyboarder in der Band habe ich oft Angst, dass eine gute Rockband durch kitschige Technosounds ruiniert wird, aber gerade hier merkt man, dass die angenehmen elektronischen Klänge den Sound erst so richtig vervollkommnen.

Old World Vulture machen instrumentalen Rock wie er mir gefällt, bleibt für mich nur zu
hoffen, dass man sie auch mal in Europa sieht.

Old World Vulture follow the tradition of the more aggressive works Broken Social Scene or Mogwai and on their self-titled EP guitars roar to wild rhythms, relaxed synthesizers sound to gentle melodies and then they let it rip again.
The 3 Songs are well structured, atmospheric alternate witch energetic parts and the tension is maintained right from the beginning.
When there is a keyboarder in the band i´m always afraid that tacky techno-sounds will ruin a good rock band, but right here you realize that the anything but cheesy electronic sounds really fuse the sound of the band.

Old World Vulture play instrumental rock as i enjoy it, I can only hope that they´ll play in Europe some-when.
