Ben Woods' viertes und neuestes Werk - gewissenhaft moments betitelt - folgt einem, dem Vorgänger ähnlichen Aufbau. Drones, die vom zerbrechlichen Piano überlagert werden, legen einen Schleier über die Kompositionen, der das Fenster in die Vergangenheit milchig trübt. Diese, an frühe Stars of the Lid erinnernden Klangwolken, sind die Wächter der Erinnerung, die Hüter der Geschichte. Sie geben Einblick in die einstmaligen Momente der Einsamkeit, in die Momente des Glücks, in die Momente der Friedlichkeit und der Verwundbarkeit.

Ben Woods' fourth and latest effort - conscientiously titled moments - follows an approach similar to its predecessor. Drones, overlain by fragile piano, put a haze across the compositions, that blurs the window to the past. These clouds of sound, reminding of the early Stars of the Lid, are the watchmen of the memory, the guardians of history. They give insight into the past moments of solitude, into the moments of happiness, into the moments of peacefulness and vulnerability.

Toma - As We Fall Into Static Our Hearts Sing (2009)

Dichte Wolken sammeln sich am Nachhimmel und trüben die Sicht auf die Sterne. Der Mond scheint blass durch den grau-schwarzen Vorhang und spiegelt sich in einem kleinen See in Zentral-England. Dort stehen Toma und singen ihre düsteren und dennoch herzhaft schönen Lieder.

Der Soundvorhang bestimmt, wie die Wolken den Nachthimmel, den Klang von Tomas Liedern. Der Brite baut in seinen Liedern eine dröhnende Mauer auf, die auf reinen und wundervoll sphärischen Shoegaze trifft. Toma sind episch, atmosphärisch, schön und traurig, balladesk und dennoch verloren in ihr Innerstes.

Das Album As We Fall Into Static Our Hearts Sing ist ein in sich stimmiges Album, das eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre mit sich bringt. Der Hörer wird in seine Gedankenwelt transportiert und kann für 40 Minuten alles um sich herum vergessen.

Herausragend ist der Song Fallback Lighthorsemen, der all diese Gefühle zusammenfasst und wirklich tief vordringt. Er erinnert hie und da sogar ein bisschen an Yndi Halda. Verbessert werden könnte noch die Aufnahmequalität und vielleicht die Abwechslung zwischen den Stücken. Man kann jedoch von einem sehr eigenen Stil reden und von einem wirklich wundervollen Album!

Thick clouds gatter in the nightsky and blear the sight to the stars. The moon shines paly through the grey-black curtain and mirrors in a small lake right in the middle of England. There are Toma and sing their bleak yet hearty, beautiful songs.

The curtain of sound dominates the sound of Toma’s songs, just like the clouds dominate the nightsky. The Brit builds a drony wall in his songs, which constitute clear and wonderful spherical shoegaze. Toma are epic, atmospheric, beautiful and sad, melancholic yet lost into their marrow.

The album As We Fall Into Static Our Hearts Sing is a harmonious album with a wonderful atmosphere. The listener drowns into his thoughts and is able to forget everything that revolves around him for 40 minutes.

The song Fallback Lighthorsemen is outrageous. It sums up all the feelings and is really deep. Sometimes he even reminded me of Yndi Halda. The only thing that leaves room for improvement is the sound quality and the variety of the tracks in the album. Still, I am glad to say, this is a very awesome album with a very unique style!

Bleeding Heart Narrative - This Octopus Is Going To Eat Your Face (2009)

Nachdem das aktuelle Album von Bleeding Heart Narrative All That Was Missing We Never Had In The World bei den Kritikern so gut ankam, freut es einen natürlich umso mehr, dass seit kurzem die Debut EP this octopus is going to eat your face frei erhältlich ist. Neben diesem Download hält Oliver Barrett aus London ein weiteres interessantes Konzept zur Verbreitung der wenigen noch übrigen physikalischen Kopien bereit, so schreibt er auf seiner Myspace Seite: "available for 4£ or, preferably, barter (a mix CD, a drawing, a battered old paperback book, a jar of marmelade, a fir cone, a poem - whatever you like)".

Im Tauschgeschäft erhält man dann experimentelle Ambient Stücke, die Klavier, Gesang und filigrane Gitarrenarbeit enthalten und dabei wahnsinnig tolle Atmosphäre schaffen. Vom emotionserweckenden Opener Howl the Darkness bright über das grandiose Lied Suitcase, wessen Gesangsmelodie noch Tage später im Kopf widerhallt, schwebt man voran bis zum minimalistischen, von Streichern getragenen zweiten Viertel der Platte um schließlich vom Noise-Lied Pine Cones in den Rücken gestochen zu werden. Während man dann blutend versucht sich wiederaufzuraffen, stimmt Oliver Barrett bereits, wissend um das weitere Schicksal des Hörers, das Requiem an und lässt, kurz darauf, im letzen Lied The Night of the World die erstmals auftretenden, wuchtigen Drums mit dem verzerrten Gesang um die Schuldlosigkeit kämpfen.

Barter deal

Upon the fact that the current album of Bleeding Heart Narrative All That Was Missing We Never Had In The World was received so well by the critics, one is even more glad, that shortly, the debut EP this octopus is going to eat your face was made available for free. Along with the download, Oliver Barrett from London has another interesting concept in store to distribute the few, left-over physical copies. On his myspace site, he states: "available for 4£ or, preferably, barter (a mix CD, a drawing, a battered old paperback book, a jar of marmelade, a fir cone, a poem - whatever you like)".

For the barter one receives experimental ambient tracks, which contain piano, vocals and delicate guitar work and create a strong, wonderful atmosphere. From the emotion-awaking opener Howl the Darkness bright, over the amazing song Suitcase, whose vocal melody echoes in the head for days, one floats along to the minimalistic, string-based second quarter of the album, just to be stabbed in the back by the noise-song Pine Cones. While you're trying to get up again bleedingly, Oliver Barrett - knowing about the further fate of the listener - intones the requiem and lets the occuring, heavy drums battle with the distorted vocals for guiltlessness in the last song The Night of the World.

Jagannah - Thedious (2007)

Jagannah – das sind Peter Pitone, Scott Mary und Friederich Katzenjammer aus Modena, Italien. Modena ist die Heimatstadt von Luciano Pavarotti – man darf also gespannt sein.

Bereits der Opener „Evil Whales“ macht jedoch klar: Jagannah singen nicht mit den Vögeln, sondern kauen Beton. Heiserer und intensiver Gesang kämpft sich durch schwere Riffs. Manchmal fühlt man sich an die fiesen Momente von JESU's Debutalbum erinnert...

Die Songs bleiben schwer und bedrückend, immer wieder denkt man: Jetzt kommt der letzte Schlag ins Gesicht, jetzt geht das Geschrei richtig los, jetzt müssen die doch richtig angepisst sein... doch die Band legt noch einen drauf und macht die Riffs noch schwerer oder fährt abgefahrene Gitarren- bzw. Basseffekte auf.

Jagannah lassen sich nicht einfach in eine Schublade stecken – und das ist gut so. Man bedient sich an vielen Töpfen und braut sich so ein eigenes, finsteres Soundsüppchen zusammen, knarzend und kantig und irgendwie genau richtig – auch dank der Entscheidung für eine Proberaumaufnahme. Jagannah sind einfach nicht clean, Jagannah wollen schleifen und knarzen, und das ist gut so.

„Brisby the rabbit“ weckt einen dann nochmal kurz auf und leitet in die letzten knapp elf Minuten über: „Pianura Padana“ beschließt das Album und toppt die ersten Songs noch einmal. Schwere, bedrückende Riffs. Kurze Harmonien. Brummender Bass. Ein kurzer Ausbruch. Noch schwerere Riffs. Ein seltsamer Gitarreneffekt. Warten auf den letzten Schrei. Warten auf den befreienden Ausbruch. Warten auf den Genickschuss. Und dann ist es aus. Einfach so.

Already the opener „Evil Whales“ points out that Jagannah doesn't sing with the birds but rather chews concrete. Hoarse and intensive vocals fight against heavy riffs. Sometimes you are reminded of the invidious moments of JESU's debut album.

The songs continue being heavy and oppressive, you always keep thinking: The final strike has to come right now, the screaming has to start right now, they have to be really pissed off right now... but the band doesn't care and the riffs become even heavier or they use strange guitar or bass effects.

You can't categorize Jagannah easily – and that's nice. They work with different styles and create an own dark soundcollage, creaking and chiselled and somehow strictly right – thanks to the recording in their own practice room. Jagannah are not clean, they want to grind and creak, and that's good.

„Brisby the rabbit“ is a short awakening call and leads over to the last eleven minutes. „Pianura Padana“ closes the album and is even better than the first songs. Heavy dismal riffs. Short harmonies. A humming bass. A short outburst. Even heavier riffs. A strange guitar effect. Waiting for the last scream. Waiting for the liberating eruption. Waiting for the shot in the neck. And then it's over. Just past.

Spaces - Voyage #4 (2009)

Neuer Monat, neuer Track: Outbreak heißt der neue Track vom work in progress-Album Voyage und dieses mal wandeln Franco und Duke auf den Pfaden von Radiohead und Co.

Outbreak beginnt mit einem elektronischen Intro, das jedoch ziemlich schnell einem, wie ich es nenne, klassichen Radiohead-Riff weichen muss. Vom Aufbau her hält man sich, bis auf das kurze Intro, an die Regeln des alternative Rock, was die Qualität des Songs jedoch keineswegs mindert.

Insgesamt passt Outbreak hervorragend in das Gesamtbild des Albums Voyage, das sich immer mehr als eine Reise durch die Facetten der Rockmusik offenbart. Ich freu mich schon auf Mai...

Another month, another track... and this one is called Outbreak and adds a taste of Radiohead to the work in progress Voyage.

Outbreak starts off with an electronic intro, which soon has to make way to a Radioheade-sque riff. Structurally everything happens inside of the realm of alternative rock... except of the intro, I would say. But this does not in any way impair the qualities of this track.

All in all, Outbreak fits perfectly into the scheme of Voyage, which slowly reveals itself to be a voyage through all the different styles rock music can manifest itself in. I'm definitely looking forward to May...

Ender - Ender (2008)

Frühlingserwachen

Ender sind eine junge Band aus Neuseeland, bestehend aus fünf Migliedern. Durch ihre zarte und dennoch konkrete Musik bewirken sie ein Öffnen der Sinne. Stark ambientale Klänge werden durch hallende Gitarren unterstützt, die Gitarren durch sanfte, luftige Drums. Ender beschreiben auf Ihrem selbstbetitelten Album eine Art Drone-Rock (Eigenbezeichnung der Band) mit Shoegaze und Post-Rock Einflüssen. Eine absolut eigenständige Mischung, die die Band sehr erwachsen präsentiert.

Die Platte beginnt mit klassischem Ambient, Noises und dröhnenden Abschlüssen. Bald schon jedoch beginnt man zu realisieren, dass das noch nicht alles ist und einem nicht einfach eine x-beliebige Ambient-Platte vorgestellt wird. Das Befinden wandelt sich von ruhig und beinahe fröhlich in eine dunkle, geschlossene Atomsphäre.

Die Platte vermag es, den Hörer innerhalb weniger Minuten total in den Bann zu ziehen. Ein hierbei ständig wechselndes Ambiente bewirkt jeweils ein Erwachen des aufmerksamen Zuhörers in einer anderen Welt, um ihn dann sanft aber bestimmt in die Tiefen von Ender zu führen.

Ein wahrlich grandioses und einzigartiges Album auf diesem Gebiet, das stilistisch allerdings schwer einzuordnen ist. Ender hypnotisieren den Hörer und beweisen großes Potenzial. Respekt!

Spring awakening

Ender are a five-piece band from New Zealand. Through their tender yet straight music they effect an opening of senses. Strictly ambiental sounds are supported by reverberant guitars, the guitars are supported by tender, airy drums. On their selftitled album, Ender describe a kind of drone-rock (definition of the band) with influences of shoegaze and post-rock. An absolutely unique mix, which the band presents maturely.

The CD starts with classical ambient, noises and drony endings. But soon you begin to realize, that this is not the whole story and they have to tell a lot more than just common ambient. The feeling of moves from a quiet, almost happy to a bleak, closed atmosphere.

Ender are able to totally put a spell on the listener in only a few minutes. An incessant changing ambient actually effects a kind of awakening of the attentive listener in a different world, just to lead him thereafter into the depths of Ender.

A really great and unique album on this sector, but hard to put into a shelf. Ender mesmerize the listener and improve a lot of potentiality. Respect!

Semiosis - Pictural (2009)

Die Kunst des unterhaltenden Minimalismus

Auch im heutigen musikalischen Zeitalter gelingt es manchen neuen Bands noch, einen einzigartigen Sound zu kreieren. Zu diesen auserwählten Zeitgenossen gehören auch Semiosis. Die zwei Rumänen verlieren sich nicht wie die vielen anderen Bands aus der Richtung des Ambient-Post-Rock in langweiligen Noises oder Drones, sondern experimentieren sowohl mit Strings als auch mit Drums und diversen atmosphärischen Noise-Sounds, die ich zuvor noch nicht gehört habe.

Die Songs auf dem Album „Pictural“ sind nicht überdehnt, nicht unnötig in die Länge gezogen oder verunstaltet durch sinnfreie Klangstrukturen, sondern klar strukturiert und atmosphärisch. Die Atmosphäre vermag es auch, den Hörer in die Tiefen des Albums zu reissen und offenbart eine bildliche (pictural) Vorstellung des Sounds. So sehe ich auf der einen Seite dunkle Mitternachtsmonde schimmern und auf der anderen die Hoffnung in Form eines Sonnenaufgangs wiederkehren. Gänsehaut pur.

Semiosis lehnen sich nicht an eine bestimmte Band an, das hört man dem Sound ganz klar an, die Musik bewegt sich jedoch von stark ambientalen Leads bis hin zu brachialeren Indie-Ausbrüchen à la This Will Destroy You oder God Is An Astronaut. Eine total eigenständige Band, die mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Anerkennung verdient!

The art of entertaining minimalism

Even in the today’s era, some bands are able to create a totally unique sound. In the league of these contemporaries stand also Semiosis. The two Romanians do not lose themselves in boring noises or drones like any other band in the genre of Ambient-Post-Rock, but experiment as well with strings as with drums and atmospheric noise-sounds of which I haven’t already heard before.

The songs on the album “Pictural” are not overstretched, not unnecessary long or disfigured by senseless soundstructures, but are clearly structured and atmospheric. The atmosphere is also able to tear the listener into the depths of the album and to present a pictural (as the name of the album already tells) imagination of the sound. So I first see a dark midnightmoon shimmering and second the hope coming back in shape of a sunrise. Pure gooseflesh-feeling.

Semiosis do not lean on a specifical band, that’s the result of listening to their music, the sound moves between ambiental leads and brute indie-breakouts à la This Will Destroy You or God Is An Astronaut. A totally independent band, which should receive more attention and tribute!

Coma Cluster - Extrasolar (EP) (2009)

Vom kreativen Potenzial

Es ist einen guten Monat her, dass ich das Debut von Coma Cluster, einem Ein-Mann-Projekt von Chris aus San Francisco, hier vorgestellt habe. Ob sich jetzt in so kurzer Zeit allzu viel an der Musik verändert haben mag? Ein 2 schneidiges Schwert.

Einerseits wird am bewährten Konzept festgehalten - gelassene Gitarrenriffs, die mit ihrer Post-Rock typischen Brillianz, Reverb und Delay auf den großen Ausbruch vorbereiten, der dann Aggressivität mit dem Hang zu herzzerreißenden Melodien verschmelzen lässt. Andererseits aber hat das Songwriting eine tolle Entwicklung durchgemacht. Die Stücke scheinen erwachsen und reif, bestechen durch aufregende Spannungsbögen und Eingängigkeit.

Zugegebenermaßen, das gemeinsame Problem vieler junger Künstler wird durch Extrasolar auch nicht gelöst. Die EP steht zwar auf eigenen Füßen und zeigt wunderbaren Post-Rock, der aber - wie bei vielen anderen auch - nicht so viel neues birgt. Vielleicht würde es Chris jedoch schaffen, das Noch-nicht-Dagewesene mithilfe von neuem Input von außen zu kreieren, indem er um sein Ein-Mann-Projekt eine vollständige Band anknüpft, die im gemeinsamen Erarbeiten von Songs das kreative Potenzial voll ausnutzbar machen könnte.

Creative potential

It's been a good month since I presented the Coma Cluster's debut effort, a one-man-project from Chris from San Francisco. If a lot of the music might have changed in such a short time span? A double-edged sword.

On the one hand, it is held on to the proven concept - calm guitars, with their post rock-typical brilliance, reverb and delay, prepare for the great burst, which then fuses aggression and the leaning towards heart-breaking melodies together. On the other hand, however, the songwriting went through a fantastic progression. The songs seem grown up and mature, impressing with thrilling build ups of tension and catchy-ness.

Admittedly, Extrasolar won't solve the common problem of many young artists. The EP stands on it's own feet, offering wonderful post rock, but which - like most other's work too - holds not too much new. Maybe Chris would succeed to create unprecedented music with the aid of new input, while surrounding his one-man-project with a full band, that makes the full creative potential useable when developing songs collectively.

Fotled - Skuldra (2009)

Vom Wind getragen

Am blauen Frühlingshimmel stehen vereinzelte Wolken. Ein kurzer, schüchterner Blick lässt nur ihren Stillstand erkennen, längere Beobachtung jedoch enthüllt den zarten Wind, der die Wolken in die Ferne trägt. Sie scheinen sich aber kaum zu bewegen, den Moment des Frühlingserwachens, der die Natur zu neuem Leben aufblühen lässt, so lange wie möglich auskostend.

Die Musik von Brian Sopher aus Columbus, Ohio gleicht diesen Wolken. Unmerklich schreitet sie voran, die Lieder auf Skuldra scheinen erst still zu stehen, zögerlich spürt man dann aber doch den Luftzug, der - Layer für Layer - die großartigen Kompositionen vorantreibt. Es ist die vereinahmende Kraft der Hingebung, die den Hörer diese Dynamik fühlen lässt, ihn in Zeitlupe durch einen Schwall von Nebel zieht, um schließlich festzustellen, dass, egal wie lange man ihn auch festzuhalten versucht, jeder genossene Moment am Ende doch losgelassen werden muss, um in unseren Erinnerungen weiterleben zu können.

Carried by the wind

Lone clouds are scattered in the blue spring sky. A shy glimpse only displays their standstill, longer watching, however, reveals the tender wind, which carries the clouds into the distance. Still, they seem not to be moving, savoring the moment of spring awakening, which lets nature blossom out to new life, as long as possible.

Columbus, Ohio-based Brian Sopher's music resembles these clouds. Impalpably wearing on, the songs on Skuldra seem to be stagnant at first, until the feeling of the airflow, which pushes the wonderful compositions on, layer by layer, hesitantly occurs. It's the power of devotion, making the listener feel the dynamics, pulling him through a wave of fog, just to realize in the end, that - however long you try to hold it - every enjoyed moment has to be let go, so it can live on in our memories.

Und wieder mal gibts eine Veröffentlichung von den Nine Inch Nails, dieses mal rührt Herr Reznor aber die Werbetrommel für die anstehende Tour mit Jane's Addiction und Street Sweeper. Jede der Bands liefert 2 bis jetzt unveröffentlichte Tracks ab und die EP gibts dann, wie man es inzwischen ja wohl gewohnt ist von den Nine Inch Nails, umsonst zum downloaden.

Fangen wir mit der unbekannteren der 3 Bands an: Street Sweeper sind eine "rap rock supergroup" bestehend aus Tom Morello (Ex-RATM, Ex-Audioslave, Nightwatchman) und Boots Riley (The Roots), die bis jetzt noch kein Album veröffentlicht hat. Clap For The Killers und The Oath heißen die beiden Tracks, die mich ganz ehrlich gesagt überhaut nicht vom Hocker reißen... mit Rap-Rock hab ich eigentlich noch nie sonderlich viel anfangen können und anscheinend hat sich das bis jetzt nicht geändert. Jeder, den diese Musikrichtung interessiert kann ja mal reihören, alle anderen können die 2 Tracks ja auch einfach überspringen wie ich.

Chip Away und Whores heißen die 2 Tracks, die Jane's Addiction neu aufgenommen haben und zum Sampler beisteuern. Die Band um Perry Farrell ist ja nicht unbedingt bekannt für ihre Arbeitswut (3 Studioalben in 24 Jahren) sondern eher dafür, dass ihre Songs einen großen Bereich der Rockmusik abdecken. Genauso ist es auch bei diesen zwei Tracks: während Whores ein relativ straighter Rocksong ist, liefern Jane's Addiction mit Chip Away ein ganz besonderes Stück Musik ab, das mir persönlich ganz gut gefällt, mir aber die Worte fehlen, um es adequat zu beschreiben. Ursprünglich defanden sich die beiden Tracks auf dem ersten Album der Alternative Rock-Pioniere Jane's Addiction, ein Livealbum aus dem Jahre 1987. Jeder, der die Band nicht kennt, sollte hier definitiv mal reinhören.

Zuletzt gibts noch neues vom Industrial-Klangzauberer Reznor, dessen 2 Tracks auch gut von der With Teeth stammen könnten. Mehr muss dazu eigentlich nicht gesagt werden: wem With Teeth gefällt, dem gefallen auch Not So Pretty Now und Non-Entity... mir gefällts auf jeden fall.

Insgesamt ergibt sich ein etwas zwiespältiger Eindruck, vor allem von der anstehenden Tour, da alle Bands doch sehr untewrschiedlich sind und das ganze schon auf der EP nicht so ganz zusammenpassen will. Davon kann und sollte sich dennoch jeder selber überzeugen... sowohl live als auch auf dieser EP.

With his newest release, Trent Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails seem to run an advertising campaign for their latest tour with Jane's Addiction and Street Sweeper. Each of the three bands contributes 2 previously unreleased tracks and the EP itself can then be downloaded from a special homepage created only for that purpose... like the last few times Mr Reznor released something.

Let's start with the least known band: Street Sweeper is a rap rock supergoup consisting of Tom Morello (ex RATM, ex Audioslave, Nightwatchman) and Boots Riley (The Roots). Those two haven't released any records so far and as far as I am concerned, after listening to their contributions (Clap For The Killers and The Oath), I don't really care that much if they ever do. Don't get me wrong, the tracks are probably good, but I could never get into that rap rock sound. Everybody who likes that kind of music, go ahead, give it a try but I will keep skipping those two tracks.

Jane's Addiction chose to re-record Chip Away and Whores from their debut live album Jane's Addiction and have them put on this sampler. Although the band never released a lot of records (only 3 studio records in about 24 years, not counting the many times they broke up and then reunited), they managed to incorporate a lot of different styles in those records. And it's the same with the two tracks on this sampler: Whores being a pretty straigt rock song and Chip Away being somthing entirely different I don't know how to describe right now... but I like it. Everybody how doesn't know Jane's Addiction yet should definitely listen to these songs.

Last but not least, there's 2 tracks by Mr Reznor which sound just like they were off of With Teeth and if you liked With Teeth, you are going to like Not So Pretty Now and Non-Entity... which I do.

All in all this package leaves me a little bit puzzled considering the fact that these three bands are going on tour together while they don't really have anything in common except that they all make music. It just doesn't work that well for me... but what do I know. And after
all, you have to decide for yourself.
